77 players at the FFG regionals!

I played against a Vader shuttle with swarm and next to a firespray/shuttle list.

Our meta is weighted heavily towards rebels, but I only played one rebel all day. Either way it was a blast!

raelly interested in the upgrades and support ships on that firespray/shutttle squad u faced. was it kath+omicron+2 academy?
Sorry, but I'm not certain of the upgrades as I played next to him twice and not against, I didn't get a chance to look or check. I do think he was running Soontir as support. 65 minute rounds and no break didn't leave much time to not be playing, unfortunately. Edit: I think he finished 29th. There was also an interesting bomber list that made top 16 with seismically and flechette torps bun not sure on the exact number of each.

soontir + 2 shuttles was likely what he played. im guessing Kagi and Omicron, both with boost and gunner or kagi as gunship and vadershuttle.

Well, he was definitely running one firespray.

This just reinforces the belief I have that double elimination is just a better format.

Think about how many lose 3 games and leave ruining other peoples strength of schedule. or lose 4 games etc. Your ability to make the top cut shouldn't have to depend on other people staying the full rounds of swiss.

Even the FIFA format with groups leading to the finals is better.

I don't know if it is a math thing with 77 people but I am a bit surprised that they didn't run just 5 and then pair down for 3 rounds of finals.

I will say that I had some early losses and didn't see hardly any people leave after 3 losses. In the third round they were still using table #37 which tells me people really were staying. One person had to leave as his kid was going to the emergency room, that doesn't count.

Now, it did seem that a handful left rather than play round 6, but 5 rounds no breaks with a pile of losses, I can't say I blame them. When I was setting up for round 7 I found a stress token from my round 6 opponent. In the process of returning it to him I did see that table positions 30 onward were abandoned, so it looks like they had another handful leave then too.

I remember hearing that 10 people dropped, all after the fifth round, but I could be hazy on the exact numbers.

I think the number of rounds is to get clearer seeding for the Top 8, and a better idea on the top 16, where prizes were given. 5 rounds would probably have relied on even more tiebreakers.

I'm not a math guy either, so I'm not sure if there is a better system that also allows people to play all day if they've driven hours for the regional, many of whom paid for two nights in a hotel. The bottom line is that while it is a competition, it's not solely about that for the company nor for a lot of the people that participated, so double elimination probably wouldn't fit.

I could easily have missed some, but I seemed to be the only one running TIE Bombers. Finished #13.

There were only 10 drops the whole tournament.

Even after 3 losses with zero chances of getting a prize, you still have the fun of playing the game a bunch more.

I'm pretty sure that was Tyler with the following list I'm quite familiar with at this point:

Soontir+PTL

Krassis+HLC+Recon Spec

OGP+Vader

Great day's worth of games and got the chance to play some great players I'd never had the privlidge of facing before. I ended up finishing a somewhat disappointing 53rd, but had a pretty strong strength of schedule having games against 3 that finished in the top 16 and 1 loss against Patrick, who ended up taking it all. I felt I flew very well through the first 5 rounds (unfortunately suffering through some absolutely obsurd cases of dice betrayal in rounds 3 and 4). At that point I was sitting at 3-2, but one win was a very close 4 point modified win against Ryan's 5 bombers from round 2. After that, I had some mental fatigue set in during round 6 as I inexplicably flew Soontir right into some range 3 alpha fire while playing the usual peek-a-boo with Vader's firing arc extremely early in the game. Just a dumb mental mistake due to a very long day of games without a break. Oh well, it was a ton of fun regardless. Congrats to Patrick on taking it all and all the other great players who survived the war of attrition to make top 16. With 77 players, that's a heck of an accomplishment.

Oh ya, I forgot that game was as close as it was. It felt worse on my end, and I think you would have pulled a full win had we more time. I had not gotten to practice against a TIE swarm in advance, and you did a good job forcing a favorable engament.
