Starting out - what to buy, What makes a good set?

By jimjim19681968, in X-Wing

Hi,

I have on order 2 core sets and two expansions. (X-wing, TIE fighter).

Can the jedi masters hear recommend how to expand my set to have the best experience and great gameplay?

Thanks in advance,

J.

I personally just picked up my set as well, what im doing is going to get 1 of each for my faction to get familiar with the ships and then see if i need extras from there, so if you like the tie intercept for example after getting one go back and pick up another or better yet the imperial aces set. Hope this helps.

It all depends on what you're aiming for, and how big your wallet is. There isn't a single ship that isn't worth getting at least one of, so just pick whatever tickles your fancy and play with it.

One of each of what you like.

Agreed. You'll notice that some ships are amazing in attack, some others are incredibly agile, some others work best when supporting others. A great part of the fun in the game is also represented by this: discovering step by step all the secrets of the ships and decide how to develop properly your fleet.

Also, some take sides: more Imperial or more Rebel ships. It really depends on your gaming style (wanna do tournaments? or just playing with friends? both are good, but if the former, then you might want to choose one side to spend more money on; if the latter, both are equals).

And, uh, get a Falcon. Not because of the ship per se, but simply because every SW fan should have one :) (but aye, the ship's good too!)

Thanks for advice, folks.

The Falcon. Yes, of course. It would be a travesty not to have it.

I thought it funny (though not for poor Harrison) that Han Solo hurt his ankle on the door of the Falcon this week.

Wishing Harrison Ford a speedy recovery. The rebels need him. He's the coolest guy they got.

Purchasing one of each ship also gives you the advantage of having the full range of pilot and upgrade cards to choose from. The expansion packs for the X Wing and TIE fighter both include cards you do not receive in the core set.

Consider who you will be playing with as well. If there are not many players in your locale, having additional ships allows a friend to try out the game.

4 of everything - sell a kidney if you have to - that's why you have 2 to begin with.

Seriously, I agree with the Docktor. One of each until you see what you like.

We've had a few new players starting up at our club lately (ya!). Here's the advice I give them:

2 starter sets are really worth getting. They're great value, the X wing and TIE are seen in most competitive lists, and having the extra templates tokens and (most importantly) dice is very useful.

Your second purchase(s) should be either the TIE or X-Wing expansion. If you want to specialise in either rebels or imperials you could get just one but if you fancy a bit if both get them both.

After that you can pretty much chose whichever ships you like the look of best. Every ship has viable builds, most of them have multiple. You'll find you enjoy the game flying the ships you like the look of, and can then start to find a list that works with your favourites and your play style. There's a large number of viable competitive builds in the game so there's no need to worry about buying something that you'll never use.

A simple answer is 2 B Wings and a Falcon if you are running Rebels. I can't comment on the evil empire.

Easy answer: 2 core sets, 1 of everything else

After two core sets I would definitely recommend Imperial Aces and the Falcon. Then B-wing and Firespray.

If you are looking for a core collection of workhorse ships to build around I would get something like this:

2 core

1 TIE expansion

1 Interceptor

1 imperial aces

1 firespray

1 TIE advanced*

1 xwing expansion

1 y-wing

1-2 b-wings

1 Falcon

It's worth getting one of everything and you can always expand once you get a feel for what you like, but these are all ships that you don't need advanced game knowledge or clever squad building strategies to use effectively. Don't hesitate to get something you like even if its not on this list though, the game is not so complicated that you can't figure things out as you go.

*note that the TIE advanced is much maligned by the competitive community, but no collection is complete without Darth Vader, and his ability is good enough to make the ship playable even if he is the only worthwhile pilot for it.

TIE Advanced also gets Squad Leader, which is conveniently unique, meaning only one ship per side can use it. So get one.

The prototypical Next Step is either:

  • A Large Ship (Slave-1 or Millennium Falcon Expansions)
  • Multiple Ships in the box (2nd Core Set, Imperial Aces, eventually Rebel Aces).

All of these options will give you a decent 100 point fleet with proxied Upgrades, and come with perks other than just the pilots that come with them.

The Expansions come with a healthy infusion of new and wonderful upgrades.

The 2nd Core Set gives you more dice, a 2nd set of templates and rulers, and buffs both factions simultaneously.

These "Next Steps" are typically followed by the maxim: "Buy what excites you!"

You already have two core sets, and one Tie/X-Wing expansion.

My advice?

(1) Walk into your LGS.

(2) Empty content info your wallet (including any/all credit cards) onto counter.

(3) Sign document stating that, "all future monetary gain by undersigned shall be forfeit in exchange for new/more releases by FFG for "X-Wing Miniatures." This also includes vehicle and home ownership rights and rights to firstborn child."

(4) Enjoy

We have a support group on Mondays and Thursdays.

See you there!

The other "must-buy" expansions in my opinion, broken down by faction...

Rebels:

Millenium Falcon

B-Wing

Imperials:

Slave I

TIE Interceptor

I wouldn't even sweat it. Just buy whatever you like. Every ship is worth having at least one of and list building it part of the fun. Were I you, I would just buy whatever strikes my fancy. When the time comes when I want to try a four HWK list, then I'd buy four HWKs.
