Bring Out the Big Guns! Wave 5 announcement

By dvorm, in X-Wing

Not necessarily. Who is likely to be the better pilot, the lower ranking gut who flies combat missions all the time or the higher ranked guy who has the authority to keep himself safe most of the time.

The admiral's level may just be an exceptional individual, or, more likely, a flag officer with an elite personal pilot who does the actual flying for him.

To add to that, the talented pilot who took out the first Death Star was low man on the totem pole. He's PS8, what do you imagine his rank was?

I'm gonna go with "hey rookie get me my coffee" as his rank

I'm calling it here and now (without looking at the pic of the card)... INTIMIDATE = Enemy ships in your firing arc roll 2 fewer attack dice at RB 3. (Decimator Only).

Hey, I can dream can't I?

Cheers

I'm feeling like with a name like "Intimidate," it will be another way to assign stress to an enemy. I'm hoping for something that doesn't do it to the target, maybe another enemy. Something like:

After you perform an attack that deals at least one damage card to the defender, assign one stress token to an enemy ship within Range 1-2 of the defender.

Just a thought, no grounds for this.

i hope u guys are aware of that the outrider can barrel roll !! thats insane and i really like dat idea cnat wait to see that i naction evne if i dont collect rebels ;P

So assuming the two large ships are all of wave 5, perhaps they wish to switch to a 2 ship wave schedule. So Assuming two Imp Huges, we could have another 2 ship wave 6 already planned out, or another couple ace type sets.

I'm just pondering here so could be wrong, but I wouldn't put anything past FFG as they've been ramping up releases lately.

It says it in the first line, this IS Wave Five, two Large and oh so wonderful ships.

:)

I think you are right. I have been expecting it to happen, they have the new HUGE Imp already done, now they are just getting everything ready to release it for X-Mas.

;)

I am calling it a Vigil...

another "more for fun than reality" guess:

Whenever an enemy is destroyed by your attack, you may assign 1 stress token to all other enemy ships.

Ruthless also interests me. A possible Imperial only EPT? Sign me up!

Yeah I'm definitely sure that says "imperial only" too. I'll have to remember that before I go off on my next "imperials are getting shafted" rant... ;)

I love the ships of Wave 5.
My question is -- is Wave 5 going to be a 2-ship wave, since no other Rebel or Imperial ships have been announced as of yet?
My concern with that is, however unlikely (I hope), that Fantasy Flight is running low on ships from the Rebellion Era. The last time this happened was with Star Wars Miniatures from Wizards of the Coast. If you remember, they dropped the number of units in a set from 60 pieces to 40 pieces, before the Lucas license was pulled.
It may be nothing, but it's got me a little concerned. My 2 Credits.

Ignore WOTC. They were looking to drop the license anyway.

Honestly, I think this is just FFG's way of streamlining their production process. And being friendly to us. How many wallets would cry at the $30 and $40 ship, combined with 2 more $15 ships to get multiples of. Also, it is less of an obvious burden if they release 2 ships every 3 months, with additional product in between, than 4 ships every 6 months. That, and I think they may not be getting 4 ships at a time from LFL from Rebels and Episode VII.

Quite frankly, except for some fix here and there (cough, Tie Advanced, cough), I would be okay if the game stopped production. Rest coming is just icing on the big cake. Its not as if they stopped before making the Tie Bomber or another iconic ship. Ofcourse, icing is the best part so, I hope they don't stop soon!

They've proved there are niches they have left to fill. I would love to see what they're up to.

Besides, if they release ships you don't want you won't have to get them. You can just play with what you still have.

Of course, if the insane numbers in Cubanboys thread about preorders, most of you will still be ordering 20 copies of ships you hate anyway (not accounting for any wicked awesome upgrade cards they might contain).

No!

Hence why I said that icing is the best part and hope they don't stop soon.

What's that about the insane number of Cubanboy threads?

Ignore WOTC. They were looking to drop the license anyway.

WOTC's license issues don't negate the problem of having a limited supply of ships available. The first three waves were able to use familiar movie ships, except for one ship from a popular video game series. Wave 4 is all EU ships, but except for the phantom they're familiar EU ships with a lot of history behind them. But that's about it, from here the options get pretty limited. Wave 5 has one popular ship that everyone wanted, but the other one is some obscure video game ship that most people had probably never heard of before.

I think he said he hates all those 20 threads about Preordered ship that Cubanboy insanely spammed those past 2 weeks.... Or something like that...

No, I'm referring to one thread, and (what I feel) are insane numbers of ships for people to preorder. And I was speaking a little hyperbolically.

I could see them doing a prequel-based game with the exact same mechanics of X-Wing and make it so that it coincides with X-Wing but acts as 2 additional factions that can be brought to the table. This could also make way for multiple formats within X-Wing: Prequel Trilogy Series, Original Trilogy Series, and Legacy (Prequel+Original) Series for tournament diversification.

Of course, that will most likely happen if Fantasy Flight ever runs out of ideas to print and produce new ships/mechanics/flavor for X-Wing.

Between repaints, EU ships, and Rebels and Episode VII, I'm not too worried about lack of ships anytime soon.

They're already releasing ships with only 1 EU appearance. It's not really much of a leap for them to just create new ships if they run out. Why not?

I for one have never played stsr wars galaxies or heard of the decimator at all. Even though I have no prior knowledge of it I'm excited for it and can't wait for it to hit the tables. I could care less what corner of the eu they get the ships from!

Because fluff is important. People love and play the game because of the Star Wars universe, not just the game mechanics. And the more FFG gets into obscure EU stuff the more they diminish that aspect. The Z-95 has been around since 1979 and is well-established in the setting, and was eagerly anticipated. Same with the TIE defender, a ship anyone who played the PC games that inspired X-Wing will remember. But now look at the wave 5 ships: "Han is unavailable, stick a new name on the character" and "imperial players keep whining about not having a turret ship, is there anything we can give them?". Now imagine a completely new ship with even less connection to the universe than the Decimator. Can you really imagine many people getting exited about it, outside of how it will help them win games?

Plus, there's a big quality issue to worry about. So far the game has been driven by a need to represent the important ships, and FFG has done a pretty good job of it. Ships have a clear role, characters are interesting, etc. But will they be able to keep it up when they run out of relevant ships and have to start digging for obscure video game ships that nobody has ever heard of, just to keep sales from collapsing?

Someone called him: "The new guy from Tatooine. You know, the one with the bad haircut."

Not to his face, though.

Actually, yeah. I never played Shadows of the Empire, but the new ships look cool and the upgrades should do well, and I look forward to learning how to kill the 2400. I've never even heard of the Decimator but again, cool cards, amazing crew and the ship looks like it will be an interesting new thing to try out. We all got pulled into loving this game by the icons involved, but now we're hooked on the mechanics and the meta and playing it and having fun building squads. The credibility FFG and their game have earned with me really does make me give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to choosing new ships. Just look at this thread. 23 pages in about 2 days, and most of that was within a day of the original announcement. There's about a whole page of new Wave 5 related threads as well, all of them full of players who already can't wait to try out new combinations.
