New player saying hello.

By Vulpusrex, in X-Wing

Hello all, just wanted to pop in and say hello to the community, this weekend i finally took the dive to get some minis and a base game thanks to a barnes and nobles going out of sale near me. (30 dollar ships for 19, and 15 dollar single for 8 cant pass that up.) I picked up 1 base game, 1 tie advanced, 1 tie fighter, 1 imp aces pack, 1 tie intercept, 1 b-wing, 1 x-wing. I am hoping to get familiar with the game and try to find a local store near Tempe, Arizona to get some games in. Are there any products any of you would recommend, be it ships or accessory wise for a new player?

Welcome! You have everything you need already. The best thing you can do is find a local gaming club, or maybe just opponents who you can meet with, and play some games. Pick a 100pt squadron and stick with it for at least half a dozen games to see how the ships work, what its strengths and weaknesses are and so on. Then perhaps change your list and do the same - stick with it for a while so that one unlucky game doesn't give you a poor impression.

I have two of these, one for my Imperial ships, and one for my Rebels: http://www.amazon.com/Plano-Molding-5231-Double-Organizer/dp/B000HJ9514/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1402642704&sr=8-2&keywords=plano

They're modular so you can get them to fit all your various tokens, dials, templates, ships, and stands. You can even fit the GR-75 in them, but the Corvette's too big sadly.

You may also want to grab a second Core set, if you're able, as it'll give you enough Ties for a mini-swarm, as well as bring your X-Wing count up to three.

I'm honestly a bit worried about doing a public game, i tried my first organized play experience out in mesa in 08, and my opponents were beyond rude even though i explained i was new i just wanted to come out and try playing, and after having my last opponent tell me i should just melt down my minis instead of wasting everyone's time i never tried again and didn't return to that gaming store till this last month, but from what i have read online x-wing seems to have a pretty friendly community and that's what drawing me to try again. (I should specify this was 40k in 08 and not x-wing obviously)

That looks like one i have my old mechwarrior darkage minis in, ill have to check it out, another core set wont be a problem, they had some at the barns and nobles for about 20 bucks, i will likely get another one, thanks for the advice.

It's nothing you particularly need right now, but I, like perhaps all other players, would recommend you picking up one more core set.

It's handy to have another set of moving templates and a range ruler for games at home -- that way you don't have to share back and forth. It's also extremely handy to have double the amount of dice, as there are going to be plenty of times where you need to roll more than 3 attack or defense.

Perhaps the most important reason to pick up another set however is for the awesome deal you get on an extra X-Wing and two more TIE Fighters.

If you bought it all separate that's 3 minis @ $15 each, plus dice @ $8 = $53 MSRP not including the extra templates and tokens. It's a great deal, and picking up the core set for cheaper than MSRP is even sweeter.

As CheesyRobMan said, go easy at first. Play as many games as you can to get a feel for it and test all kinds of rules questions that come up.

Eventually you'll end up with at least one of each ship. If anything it's good to understand what ships everyone else flies and why, but that begins to delve into competitive play, which you may or may not be interested in down the road.

For now enjoy what you have, and welcome to X-Wing! :)

I'm somewhat new as well! <don't let my signature fool you>

I have found the x-wing community at large to be super polite and friendly. I played my 3-5 games at the recent assault at imdaar alpha tourney, and folks were super patient. I'd give local groups a chance!

That's horrible.

To be honest I've played a lot of games, and while not in AZ, everyone I have met in the X-Wing community has been extremely kind and helpful, even during tournaments.

My first games were met with understanding and help. I would venture to guess that the people in your area are about the same.

As someone from Team Covenant once said, "quality people playing quality games". I think it fits here.

That was rather odd behavior.

I've experienced nothing like that among X-Wing players, though perhaps others have tales to tell. I've found the X-Wing community here in Portland, OR to be very welcoming and inclusive. I'd like to believe that it's part of the 'fly casual' ethos that the community embraces.

But, yeah, welcome!

I really appreciate all the encouragement and its nice to meet you all, i am really looking forward to playing a few games hopefully soon.

I've had some similar experiences to the OP in my days of mini playing. None since I came to x-wing, but plenty with a certain other popular game which I shall leave nameless.

Grabbing another core set also gives you another set of templates, this is important because they are sturdy but do wear out, bend, fade and if the dog gets ahold of them gets chewed into pieces and with a 2nd set you would have a backup set which is great!

Something to keep tucked away is if you enjoy the game that much, finding acrylic templates and tokens helps make gameplay much more enjoyable and easy. Many websites offer these and in different variations. We use product from Applied Perspective and absolutely love the quality and quick turn around once an order is placed. Please do not take this as a post saying they are mandatory, they are not. They just help the gameplay experience.

One last piece of advice I will offer, find your favorite ships and play them! Use them in tandem lists, learn their every possible manuever, make them your own and just go to town! If someone says the ship is junk, who cares if you like it play it and prove the naysayers wrong. ( I spent over a year fine tuning an all A Wing list before it became a consistent winning list, and didn't care if people thought the A wing could never be a standalone fighter list!)

So, welcome to the community, don't be afraid to ask questions and enjoy the game....also goRebels, so I don't hve to send my rabid Ewok after you ;)

I second that. I use the exact same setup, one for Imperials, one for Rebels.

The only problem is one you'll encounter down the road if you decide to purchase any huge ships as they won't fit in them. Maybe the GR-75 transport would fit after modding the box a bit, but even then maybe not.

Are the very large ships viable in normal play, or are they a scenario type thing?

Are the very large ships viable in normal play, or are they a scenario type thing?

They're (technically - these are technical terms ;) ) called 'huge' ships. 'Large', are ships like the YT-1300, the shuttle, the Firespray, etc. - with bases 4x the normal base size.

(But I take your meaning)

The Transport and the Tantive are not for normal play, if you mean tournament play. That said, I do think they're making more avenues for them in a style called 'Epic', but I haven't seen any organized events in which they're used.

Beyond tournaments, they're fair game. They have points values. For example, the transport is only 30 points. The corvette, on the other hand, is 90 at bare minimum, and much more if you load it up with stuff.

They also make good obstacles for you to have a game around. I played a game today with a derilect transport in the middle of the board.

Ok cool, i plan on picking them both up since they are on sale, but was just curious.

They're probably both worth it for the upgrades that are used in normal games, especially the transport.

I could see using the transport in fun games at slightly higher values (150 or so) but the corvette will probably struggle in such games.

Caveat, I haven't actually gotten either on the table yet, so that is all supposition.

I think they both have a lot of potential, and I look forward to playing them.

That said, I think (too) much of the game is mired in the 6-asteroid-100-point-death-match (6A100PntDM). That makes it hard to bring these in more.

I really like the base format, for sure. That being said, I'm glad for epic and its possibility for greater and more legendary shenanigans. Both of the campaigns with the huge ships look fun.

I'm also hoping they do a campaign book at some point, something like the one they did ages ago for Descent. Perhaps a long linked multi-path campaign.

Hello and welcome, it is always great to have a new player. The following is a solid video that explains each of the ships.

For me I started with one of each of the exp because it helped me learn the game and what each ship could and could not do.

This video series is very good for a lot of different topics

Bonus
If you don't want to pay retail for ships, I have bought lots of stuff from Miniature Market and they are solid. Prices are 9.99 for a single and 19.99 for large/aces

OH and if you can buy a 2nd core set as your next buy DO IT, the dice alone are 15 and on min market the core sets are something like 27 which is a steal

All of the ships are great. The Tie Advanced needs a little work, but still comes with useful upgrades. And Darth Vader.

Grab a 2nd Core Set at some point. You'll need the dice, and the second set of Range Rulers and Maneuver Templates is great for playing with friends. The extra X and TIEs aren't bad either ;-).

Note that if you do this, do NOT shuffle the 2 Damage Decks together. It throws off the odds, and is therefore not Tournament Legal.

I'm glad to see that you noticed that the Tie Fighter and X-Wing expansions come with unique pilots and non-core upgrades. A lot of new players miss that :)
