Vessery meets the Jonus Brothers

By 0rph3u5, in X-Wing

So, despite the lack of personal empirical data on the Defender I've been trying to get it in 100 points list, and the following came to mind:

Colonel Vessery - TIE Defender

Captain Jonus - TIE Bomber

+ Flechette Torpedos

+ Munitions Failsafe

Scimitar Squadron Pilot - TIE Bomber

+ Flechette Torpedos x2

Scimitar Squadron Pilot - TIE Bomber

+ Flechette Torpedos x2

I'm counting heavily on the fact that the loaded Bombers might be a more tempting target than a flanking Defender.

C&C welcome

Question about Vessery's ability....

When you acquire that target lock "immediately" after rolling dice, do you get to spend that target lock on the dice you just rolled?

Yes

I am conflicted, honestly.

Is Jonus providing his bonus over two turns to two Flechette Missiles better than Jonus providing his bonus over one turn to a Cluster Missile?

This could also be seen thusly: Is spreading the Cluster Missles 2 attacks of 3 over 2 turns worth giving a Stress on both of those attacks?

Also, with Vessery not sporting a laser-gun of any sort, he doesn't benefit from Jonus' inclusion in any way.

I prefer him with 3 Gammas with Seismic Charges, m'self.

Vassery doesn't benefit from Jones much even with a laser, since ideally you'll always have a lock

I like it. I think it's fairly clear he wants loaded bombers as a distraction, and also to ensure that he is looking for target locks so that Vessery can "borrow" them. I think it's solid and worth some table time, for sure.

I was too but since Vessery fires first at one of the targets with TL and possibly Focus he might get in enough damage that (unless it is large ship) Cluster Missiles can end up being overkill for anything but a B-Wing (which you wouldn't want to target with a Flechette anyway, since every 2nd B-Wing is going ot be Farlander soon). And esspecially on Imperials Clusters could easily become wasted.

Arming the bombers with different armaments each would also make the list less felxible and the attack with Vessery easier to predict ("of course he is going to shoot X because Bomber Y is locked on ot it")

Also, with Vessery not sporting a laser-gun of any sort, he doesn't benefit from Jonus' inclusion in any way.

He is not supposed to... he is the Hammer ot the Bombers' Anvil so to speak; even thought the Defender and the Bomber have really good overlap on their dials flying them in formation was not exactly what I had in mind.

I like your list. Lots of fun stress giving is probably going to be the real key to Victory. I myself would consider dropping Jonus and just taking Homing Missiles, cuz I just love those things. I haven't tried Vessery without an HLC, so if you play test, let me know if he earns his point cost.

I also recommend making Vessery work with an HLC and Engine. Try this one:

Vessery + HLC + Engine + VI

Scimitar + Concussion

Night Beast + Target Comp

Backstabber

100pts

You'll really like HLC on Vessery, and want Engine for getting good arcs and escaping for a turn to 4K back in.

Obviously the Bomber and Night Beast are there to provide the TL, but they also have a use for it of the I own, especially night beast with that free focus. I recommend saving the Concussion missile until you have both TL and F. Also, this should finally be a list where Backstabber gets to shine. The opponent might just prefer shooting Vessery and his TL support more than Backstabber.

I've now run this list and variants of it around the block a number of times, so time for an Update:

Colonel Vessery - TIE Defender

+ Ion Cannon

Captain Jonus - TIE Bomber

Scimitar-Squadron - TIE Bomber

+ Flechette Torpedos x2 OR Cluster Missiles

Scimitar-Squadron - TIE Bomber

+ Flechette Torpedos x2 OR Cluster Missiles

Since I don't have Flechette Torpedo-Cards yet (please stop hoarding Torpedo-cards, Rebels) I ran with Clusters all the time and my initial fears that they wouldn't cut it were unfounded; you will have to play the Bombers more agressively but with a bit of practice that's no problem...

However Ion Cannons on a Defender have proven to be a blast, esspecially on the named pilots, so I substituted the upgrades on Jonus for a Cannon on Vessery (which makes Jonus also less of a target and boosts his survivablity)

I like this. Sticking with 2x Flechette torps, I swapped the Ion Cannon on Vessery for Squad Leader on Jonus; allowing him to give a Scimitar a second action (getting that F+TL!)

The only modification I will do to your build would be to give 2 Flechette instead of a Concussion missile. Giving up a stress token can be deadly to opponent with Vessery K-turn.

I like you squad ideas.

I have been running something very similar with a lot of success.

Vessery w/ HLC & Vet Insticts

Scimitar w/ Flechette Torps & Munitions Failsafe x3

100 Pts

I am going to make a few tweaks to outfit the Ion Cannons on Vessery. That sounds like a lot of fun. I think I would still skip Captain Jonus because I don't want Vessery tied to staying at range 1 of him.

Another option for the squad is to drop ordinance on Jonus and run him with Squad Leader. This allows him to pass his PS6 action to one of the Scimitars, granting them a Focused Target Lock.

The two points you save from the Flechette/Failsafe combo can then go towards a Seismic Charge. Or run him naked, switch one Bomber to Assault Missiles, the other to a lone Flechette, and give Vessary a Heavy Laser Cannon.

EDIT: NVM, Vessary (35), Jonus (22) and two Scimitars (32) comes to 89 points before upgrades. For some reason, I though Flechettes were 3 points.

After my horrid performance in the regionals last weekend, I will never field ordinance in large numbers again. And may never field ordinance again. It is just too much risk for not enough reward. And the one shot nature of the ordinance is problematic. Now if you want to run Vessary, then take a shuttle with the title, and maybe even a weapons engineer. The engineer gets a target lock on the shuttle's target and you can use the other lock on whoever you want Vessary shooting. And with the Shuttle title you don't have to keep them together.
