Designing a Rebel Capital Ship

UPDATE: Added a Picture!

So, I have about a dozen sheets of insulation, they are 2 feet by 4 feet and 3 inches thick, from lowes. They are green colored, idk why.

Originally I was going to make a Warhammer 40,000 game board in 2012, but got sidetracked and also the game lost the fun aspect of it. Recently I dusted them off and was going to take them to the dump, but then I though "why not make a capital ship out of it?"

Making an Imperial ship would require more expertise than I actually have, with pipes and windows in-between the armored plates. However, an Mon Calamari type of ship would be easier to make (I think) because I can just smooth out most of the hull and add bulbous segments to match the MC80 designs.

The Plans:

  • I plan on the main body to be 4 feet long, and be about as wide as the corvette, from 18-24 inches.
  • Using a nifty rule of thirds on big ships, the rear third will be devoted to engines, reactors, power storage, engineering, all the core systems. Another third will be devoted to life support and crew quarters. Food/water storage and recreational facilities. Bacta tanks and mess halls. You get the picture. The last third will be the weapon batteries, ammo storage, damage control systems, hangers, spacecraft storage, and those spacecraft fuel and ammo storage.
  • It will be winged, just like the MC80 Liberty Designs.

Role:

  • A very large hanger bay stretching from port to starboard in the midship defines its true role, as a squadron carrier. The Top of the hanger bay I will try to make removable, so I can play with the toys inside!
  • Light Weapons for the ships size, to emphasize the reliance on starfighters.
  • Heavy shields and light armor, but tough hull.

Sounds pretty awesome!

What kind of insulation are you using as your building material?

Do you have some images of the ship you're trying to emulate, or is this completely homebrew (which sounds cool too.)?

While you're at it, by the way, light it up! Put LEDs inside. :)

Oh, don't worry, it will have LED's (and resistors, I know not to have LED's directly attached to batteries) and be all fancy.

It will be home-brewed most likely, but I will try to keep the style similar to that of traditional Mon Calamari ships. It, when finished, will most likely be a centerpiece for a campaign.

Anyone have any good suggestions for a free image upload site? That way I can post sketches, drawings, and pictures. Is there a way for google drive to do it for me or something?

There are any number of picture upload services. I just use the webspace provided by my ISP (comcast), and upload things there using FTP. Otherwise I'd have more advice for you on that front.

For a Mon Cal cruiser, home brew is entirely appropriate. I think those were all supposed to be slightly different anyways - spaceborn works of aquatic-style art, or something of that nature.

I use photobucket.com

I truly hope this project sees the light of day and this thread isn't just another "I plan to ....." that disappears into obscurity. I'm excited to see it!

Photobucket works well. That's what I use when I need to post pics of something

Photobucket it is then. I have been gathering materials and reading websites on how to work with the stuff, seems like I will need an electric or heated knife, and some type of special glue. Also, finally uploaded an Image, and added it to the original post.

Very Plain, but its just to be an outline that I can stick too while building said ship. Construction should start Tuesday or Wednesday.
