Advice on Running an Escalation League

By fuzzyinferno, in X-Wing

My game store is looking to run an X-Wing league and I thought that adapting the tournament rules for escalation would be the best way to do this. Following the escalation rules, week one would be 60 points, adding 30 points / week and culminating in 150 points after four weeks. I am not requiring that the players submit their list for all four weeks at the start, rather at the beginning of each week they submit their list with the additional points. They still have to use all the ships with upgrades from the previous weeks but instead they get to add ships and upgrades based on what the other people are flying.

I have a few questions though:

1. I would like for people to play more than one game a week, especially in the early weeks when a 60 point match should take less than an hour. I also do not want to penalize players who are only able to play a single match a week. Does anybody have any suggestions on how to do rankings when people play a different number of games each week? Maybe end it with a mini-tournament on the fifth week to determine prizes?

2. While the FLGS hosts X-Wing on Thursday nights, I recognize that not everyone will be able to attend each Thursday and want them to have the option to arrange a different day to play at the store (ie two players in the league agree to meet at the store on Saturday to play a game for the league). With that in mind, I do not necessarily want to pair players up each week. I also do not want two friends to just play each other each week and not play other people. Any suggestions on handle this situation?

Anything other good suggestions on how to organize this?

1. ) Sorry mate, you're hosed on this one. Unless you can control the match-ups as they come (at least in making sure the number of matches are even), the results will be unbalanceable.

If, however, you can even out the number of matches, using Swiss weighting ought to be good enough.

[[[ Win/Mod/Tie/Loss convert to 5/3/1/0 points, most points wins, and strength-of-schedule breaks a tie. ]]]

If they're match-selecting for themselves, you may want to add a Bounty system as well, wherein stronger opponents are worth more points to beat. This gets complicated quickly, so picking the matches yourself would be preferable.

2. ) Organize it with a shared Online document (I'm thinking a Google Drive spreadsheet).

This way, you can keep track of who has played whom, and let them know that only the first match per opponent will count.

3. ) Yes, I know you didn't have a 3. I just want to point out that your players might be a bit lost in their fleet construction.

To that end, feel free to use the Escalation Compendium as a resource.
I would also be willing to send you a link to view the GDoc in which I have shown several of those fleets come to fruition.

Thanks for the feedback, I do appreciate it. I do not expect this league to be very large so hopefully I can just pair like a tournament. A Google Drive spreadsheet is a great idea for keeping everyone on the same page in terms of match ups.

You are right, some players, especially newer players may not know where to start when it comes to building a squad. The link to the other forum topic is an excellent thing to provide them.

Thanks!

No prob! Let us know how it goes, and give us some battle reports. We Escalators are hungry for information! And occasionally shoelaces, which unfortunately leads to maiming.
