Scum Background Packgage

By bluance, in Dark Heresy House Rules

Precognitive Scrounger

Career: Scum

Home World: Void Born

XP Cost: 300xp

some born in the void must walk the line between the working parts of whatever vessel they were born upon, and the forgotten black holds where disease festers. Keeping commerce flowing between the less fortunates of the ship and the mutants and criminal stow aways isn't for the faint hearted but some have a seeming knack for surviving such a life, and others know just how they seem to be just a hairs length away from being swallowed into the bowels of the darkest holds. The void gifted these rare individuals with knowing just how to move and when just a moment before they would have lost an arm and fell prey to the angry mutant that had lost its mind. Wether they realise it or not, these individuals have just small tinge of control over the warp, using it to see the blurry visions into the future that keep them avoding deaths embrace. They must take great care however, to keep there secret from reaching the ears of anyone who may ship them off to the holds of the black ships.

Effects:

characteristics: -5 Fellowship, Strength, Toughness

Skills: You begin play with Deceive(Fel), Barter(Fel), Forbidden Lore(Mutants) (Fel).

Talents: Jaded, Peer(Underworld)

Corruption Points: You begin the game with 1d10 corruption points.

Mutation: You gain access to the Precognition minor psychic power and may use it as if you had a Psy Rating of 1. You do not gain any additional Psychic powers as having a Psy Rating of 1 would grant. If you would somehow aquire a psy rating you will allways use the Precognition power obtained from this background as a Psy Rating of 1.

I'm not sure what the xp cost of this background package should be, but i liked the flavor of it and decided to give it a whirl. Any suggestions or comments about this would be appreciated thanks!

All hail the Changer of Ways ;)

I'm not sure about the cost but to deal with the Precog and the Psy I'd just make it the minor mutation: Wyrdling. It gives you one minor power and it's used as if the person had a Psy rating of 1. That way it takes it out of the realm of nacent psyker and puts it into the realm of a background package that gives you a distinctive mutation and a distinctive power.

Hell you could make them as some sort of reject navigator gene-line/bloodline that was supposed to be purged because their third eye mutation left their particular gene-stock and left them with a much lesser mutation, the precog and only the pre-cog and somehow a few survived the purge and have hidden amongst ships ever since lending to that void requirement.

Oh thats a great idea for explaining how its a more widespreaed case than a rare random thing. I'll start re-working the flavor and see how the mutation thing can make it easier to understand : P. i liked the idea of backgrounds with specfic mutations, thought it was cool to start with them rather than randomly getting them and even then one that wont be exactly interesting to have.

Glad to be of help.

At this point 400xp and than some...

You could also treat the power as a "Wild Talent" as in IH, or idd as a mutation.

I would up the Corruption to 1d10 and give him a -5 to Fel, S and T
That way it would be 300xp approx.

Alright, i was curious if more penatlies should be there to compensate. I'll work that in i just don't think a fellowship pentaly should be there. As for what to treat the power as, it doesn't really matter so long as he has a power with a psy rating of one. The actual flavor of what it is doesn't change exactly what it does, though instead of saying special i'll put mutation there. And as for thinking about the navigator idea i decided that it would just be more a mutation from being only slightly exposed to all the things in the black holds of ships.

Well perhaps instead of having a penalty on Fellowship it could instead be Intelligence; surely being able to glimps into the future must have some affect on a person's ability to concentrate on things in the here-and-now.

...Just a though mind you
