UK Group Buy From the US

By Blusox69, in X-Wing

Someone in a previous topic mentioned they had bought a couple of boxes of Imperial Aces from the US and it worked out cost effective even after paying shipping and import duty.

So given that some items like Imperial Aces are rare or over priced in the UK, would there be any interest in getting together a group buy given that prices are so good in the US and the pound is currently fairly strong? I'm based around junction 4 on the M3 and work near Gerrards cross so people in those areas could just collect from me, others I can ship to at cost within the UK. We would split the US-UK shipping and duty charges as a percentage of the over all group buy.

eg if the total group buy was £500 and you bought £50 worth then you'd pay 10% of the overall shipping/duty.

I understand giving over money online is always a risky business so if it's just people local to me who want to deal in person that's fine. Anyone interested then let me know.

If this sort of post is against house rules then sorry and feel free to remove it :-)

You could just get them straight from esdevium, minimum order is about £150. Think small ships are around £6.90ish. Free shipping as well.

I'm certainly interested in either of these options. I'm guessing that buying from Esdevium is setting up a trade account though?

My first thought as well was whether a group could buy directly from the supplier if that group was big enough. I haven't pre-ordered any Wave 4 ships, so if something does go ahead then I could be interested.

I'm not familiar with that site so I'll give them a call

I know a while back a distributor (for a different game) has said that he'd be happy with our gaming group setting up a trade account, so I guess it would be similar if Esdevium did give the go ahead.

don't know Esdevium, but in general the question if a group order is sensible (in terms of money and time savings) depends on where you order and if there is a quantity discount.

so it would make sense to include that into the initial post.

sadly, most gameshops seem to avoid directly posting international shipping costs and you have to go through some calculator to reverse-engineer some rates for a common case.

Miniature Market is the site I was thinking of. No group discount but their prices are a lot less than in the UK. You can put a shopping cart together and then enter your UK address for a shipping quote. The more people who buy the more people we can divide the shipping between. Doubling the cost of the order doesn't double the shipping so the more the merrier.

As an extreme example, 5 CR-90s is $80 shipping, but 10 works out at $114. That's roughly £45 per CR-90 at 5 or £42 at 10. Even with tax you will at worst break even with UK prices, it's more the availability of stock US side that is the main attraction.

Wow, I never realised just how bad the UK markup is...

Oh yes, we get utterly gouged over here.
It's worse when a company announces their latest games console prices as $400 for US customers or £400 of UK customers :P

Esdevium are the UK distributor for X-Wing, so normally sell to stores not individuals. A trade account with them should yield excellent prices... if it can be done.

I'll see what can be done with Esdevium

if you are looking at standard shops, amazon seems to have the best shipping costs (7$ per order, $1.99/lb) and since the expansions are relative light you get good conditions. I can't really speak for the actual item prices in comparison, as I don't compare them regularly. The shipping for the named example should be around 30$ for 5 and around 50$ for 10, just calculated from their shipping rates table.

Does US Amazon ship internationally? I always get directed to their UK site.

They do, sometimes they suggest to use the german site in my case, but you still can use the US site, with the same account information actually.

Miniature Market ships internationally. We from Brazil buy all our stuff from there since there is no X-wing around here. We do the same splitting shipping and taxes.
