The Falcon and the Bumblebee

By That One Guy, in X-Wing

Tonight I had one of the closest, most epically awesome games of my X-wing career. It came down to a Scimitar Squadron Pilot with 3 hull against Han Solo… and I freakin' WON! So close, such good maneuvering on both sides, a very even match. I've never had a 'come from behind' victory before. Either either neck and neck and then over, or crushing victory or defeat.

So pumped right now...

The question is, how would you feel right now if you had lost instead?

I had fun back to back games last week that were super close and thrilling.

Game 1: I flew Bounty Hunter x2 w Soontir against Soontir Carnor Vader. Was down to my bounty against his Soontir. It came down to two crits on Soontir, neither were direct hits so I lost by points. Even though I lost, it was so exciting though I wasn't upset.

Game 2: Same build for me against Biggs Red Squadron and Blue Squad FCS x2. We both made one critical flying error each, him losing Biggs and me losing Soontir. Came down to me being down in points overall needing to make a range three shot against his damaged B wing through an asteroid that he almost had out maneuvered. I rolled Hit Crit blank, spent a TL I had gained earlier making it hit hit crit. So then my opponent proceeds to roll two out of the necessary three evades he would have needed to survive. I destroyed the B then, shifting points into my favor, resulting in a win (barely).

Dice gods are fickle denizens,..

Hmmm.... This game sounds very familiar.

Wonder, I'm honestly not sure how I would have felt. I was pretty sure I was done once I lost Brath, so maybe I'd have just felt like that's what was supposed to happen. Can't say for sure though. My opponent said he couldn't be upset about the game because we both flew our best and it came down to a die roll. He even gave me some custom lava rock asteroids to commemorate the awesome game we both had.

Swimmy, those sounded like some really cool games. Where were your games played? You mentioned time limits and repeat builds. Was it Imdaar?

I think your quote broke...

9 posts, so you're new here. Are you new to the game as well, or just the forum?

I just went up against zinspire just now.

Me : Echo w/ Recon Spec, Adv. Cloak + Howlrunner w/ ST + Mauler w/ ST + 2xAP

zinspire : Kath w/ EH, Seismic, Merc. Copilot + Howlrunner w/ ST + 2x Alpha

Came down to Echo + AP (2 hp) vs Kath (7 hp) + Alpha (1 hp).

Kath, Alpha and Echo all have range 1 shots on each other. AP has range 2 shots on Alpha and Kath.

Kath shoots at Echo, Echo evades a crit, take a stress, no damage.

Echo decides to ignore Alpha, hope AP kills it, shoots back at Kath instead, deals 3 hits, no free cloak action since stressed.

AP takes shot at alpha, gets 2 hits, alpha can't evade (no tokens) - Alpha dies.

And I literally just realised I cheated...

Well, we forgot simultaneous fire rule: Alpha should've had a Range 1 shot on Echo.

God dammit... :(

Anyhow... Echo... maneuvering... Kath on a rock... yadda yadda... I eventually won.

Not worth anything now, Echo could've died then and there from a lucky roll on the 4v2 attack from Alpha.

In any case, I need much practice to make the Phantom shine.

No just usually too lazy to log in. I just posted because I was the one playing Gordie.

We were playing our League Games' for a x wing league we made in San Diego, CA. We do standard tournament play, 1) to keep it fair and 2) helps us all get more competitive for tournament play. Profty and I were one and one that night so I think we both walked away happy. We always have fun and almost always very close games against each other and this one was no exception.

I posted the battle report because this was the most fun I've had playing x wing in awhile, and I always have fun playing.

I figured as much. Sounds like it was a great game!

Oh ok cool. Our league does not adhere to time limits. We're a much more casual environment, trying to build our base of attendees. Today saw a significant jump there too! I was greeted with 3-4 new faces playing x-wing when i showed up today. That made me very happy as well.

Excellent! I love that from what I can see that this game grows fans and avid players and rarely loses them (yet). Cool to be on the rising swell of this wave of popularity. I have purchased three core sets for various friends as gifts to get them hooked, and I recently got a coworker to join the league and get psyched about it. Win.

Interceptors are prone to coming from behind for the win. About the same amount of times they get one shot'd

I had a game where i only had a rookie x-wing left on 1 hull against Soontir on 1 hull (who had suffered a crit, to which the effect was if he overlapped any other ship he would take damage).

After a non eventful joust (he evaded) my last ditch effort was to go for a bold movement that would hopefully cause a collision as i was not going to survive another attack. It worked, Soontir crashed into the rookie causing the last point of damage needed.

Very good match, i felt a little bad about winning cause i had been on a bit of a streak and winning this way felt cheap...

Those are the best games imho.

Too often it is a stomp-fest, one way or the other, but the rare games like this makes the X-Wing game truly shine.
