Gaming mat

By KommanderKeldoth, in X-Wing

So I recently lost my felt X-wing mat (left it at Imdaar Alpha of all places) and now I am shopping around for an upgrade.

I've heard good things about mouse pad material and yoga mat material

The one thing I dislike about the latter is that they tend to have lines on them (at least the ones I have played on) which makes eyeballing templates a little too easy

What mats are ya'll using?

Kitchen table.... :,(

Mine is from mygamemats.com, they make the neoprene mats. I'll never go back to vinyl mats

front line gaming has some "Mouse pad' mats that are 3x4' and 4x6'... but also cost a bit more... wonder if the mygame mats are rounded at the corners or you can put two of them side by side to make a 3x6' area? however one could buy the 4x6' frontline mat for a cheaper price than the two mygamemats mats.. I can vouch for the frontline mat i have one and its GREAT....

My gaming club has two Galeforce 9 starfield gaming mats but I cant recommend them. They get scratched easily, and the edges constantly want to curl up. We plan to put some plastic sheets on top to solve the problem but until then we almost do not dare use them.

mygamemats is the way to go if you have the cash. They are squared off on the edges, look great, come in a tube box that is useable for continued storage. Great find.

I could have lived without the shamless kickstarter advertisment...

then close your eyes :P

But in all seriousness if someone asks a question about a gaming mat, there is no harm in pointing them in directions of ones, even if it is a kickstarter.

Also with regards to different materials, eg vinyl, then these are on a magnetic gloss. I do tend to find lines on certain materials a massive shame as they effect the overall image. There is nothing wrong with adding variation, and nothing would get anywhere without being advertised.

The edges only fold up if you roll it with the image side in. Roll them the other way (Image out). that way the edges will sit flat when even slight pressure is applied. I have no issues with rolling, and I own 3 of them.

They do scratch pretty easily, but I think that has been addressed on newer printings. I have one from when they were originally released and two more "newer" ones and the newer ones seem to hold up better and are obviously a slightly different texture that the old ones.

I just ordered a 3x3 mat from Bannersonthecheap.com

Just upload a high res image and voila. It's cheap and works nicely. Just roll it up star-side out and you won't have any curling problems.

Don't use a mat, got a bargain from my local scrap store, 6 x 2ft by 3ft by 1/4" thick black perspex and at. 50p a sheet ain't bad
