Squad Builder

By jaekat, in X-Wing

If this is in anouther thread sorry.

What Squad Builder do you use and why? There are a lot of options.

I like the Voidstate squad builder a lot. Easy to use, and the printouts look great. You can link it to Facebook and save squads but I don't bother.

Another vote for http://xwing-builder.co.uk/build. It's pretty fantastic. Not only is it up-to-date and beautiful, it will update stats based on what you own and what upgrades you've applied. Black Squadron Pilot with Veteran Instincts? His PS will show as 6. Have R2-D6 in your Astromech slot? Now the Elite Pilot Skill combobox appears. Don't remember what cards and how many of them you own for a particular upgrade? Don't worry, the application will show you.

I agree the x-wing builder is a good one but it struggles to load on my machine so I switched to the Yet Another builder.

"Yet Another" has been great. Its my go-to and has all my saved squads.

Also you can load it as a web page on your phone and use it on the go.

I use this one to check for what is in each expansion and also to generate fun random lists.

Both Voidstate and Yet Another are great. I tend to use Voidstate on the computer I suppose mostly because that was the first one I used.

But on my tablet I use Yet Another because it's easier to navigate on my Tab 3.

The voidstate builder is one of my favorite web apps.

Its interface is so lovely and easy to use it has spoiled me for other builders.

I use these 3 pretty much all the time (and the Android App that was linked above)

I find for whatever reason that the first of the 3 I've listed tends to be down - A LOT

But, it, and the fabs squad builder are the 2 best in my opinion. The Android App is great if you're on the go, and forgot to print out your list..

Same here.

The person who codes it is a forum member, so suggestions and bug-fixes are all taken very quickly, making it delightful to use :)

I like these 2 the first is awesome because you enter what you have and it then limits you to the ships/cards at your disposal, and I like how the random build feature limits itself to that set up as well

The second I think is just the easiest for duplicating generics especially useful for Epic Play and even some normals

I'm new to this whole scene, but Yet Another is my favourite. It looks the best and is the most intuitive to use, imo.

My only complaint is that the print function doesn't work for me, and just prints a blank page with some website address text in the header. I wish the lists could be generated as jpegs so I could save/print them more easily.

Anyway, to the dude who built and maintains it: thanks! It's an absolute pleasure to use.

Actually, all three builders are maintained by forum members!

Re: printing, make sure you have whatever print option enables printing background colors and images. That usually resolves the issue. If not, let me know what browser you're using and I'll see if I can figure out what's going on.

Yeah, I'll check the settings, that's probably what's getting me.

Another little thing I'm curious about -- is there a reason the Actions and Upgrades displayed on the right-hand ship summary are written out in text instead of just displaying the little pictograms?

The Pictograms are not available for general use online, so the maker would either have to

A :: ask FFG for some support,

B :: lift them from FFG's content somehow and therefore being unable to edit them properly in his coding,

C :: approximate them with Wingdings Unicode, which might not work for your visuals

D :: use words instead of pictograms.

I'll add another vote to Yet Another Squad Builder. I like all of the options I've tried, but have found it to be my favorite. I do wish it had the collection tracking feature so squads were limited to what I owned, but I can live without it, too.

Originally it was because I didn't have icons for them. I guess I never got around to changing them to icons because I found it easier to read (icons are great and all, but sometimes text is the right thing).

Collections is something I do want to work on; the latest tournament season and work stuff made it hard for me to find the time to devote to it. (Well, one of those two things has let up, finally...) It's going to require some substantial backend changes.

Well then, that likely cements my usage of YAXWSQ. Well, that and the 20-30 or so squads I have saved there. (What? I get bored at work sometimes!)

Not yet a squad builder, but the author is working on it. But the app is already beautiful.

I am still authoring files for Army Builder. I have not gone public yet but anyone interested can get them if thay want to review them. I currently only have one reviewer.

I know Army Builder is not free, but you can manage some builds with a trial version. And if you use Army Buiolder for other games as well, why not give my files a try.

I just thought I'd pop a kudos to all the guys that give up free time to create these things for us to use.

Similar to Army Builder, I use Battlescribe for my building needs when I'm on my phone and want to save lists; the files for which are currently being maintained by Dr Lucky here on these forums.

I am a fan of geordan's Yet Another builder and voidstate's squad builder, but I'm always interested in what other people are doing and learning of new builders.

100% agree.

My question is similar but more specific to mobile web browsing on an iPhone.

What are people's experience with various squadron builders on an iPhone via a web browser (I've been using Safari, new to iPhone and missing my Android app)?

I haven't found an app available yet (though have seen XWC has a plan in the pipeline for iPhone) and have found 'Yet Another' to be better than the Void State version, it operates 'app' like but still find it limiting and difficult to hit the little 'x' to remove a card choice.

I like the Voidstate squad builder a lot. Easy to use, and the printouts look great. You can link it to Facebook and save squads but I don't bother.

its easy, its accurate. Its also visually easy going and not overly complicated.

It links to facebook, it lets you do a printable version with everythng on so for casual game you dont need to hunt out all the cards.

best thing though is that if you use the 'my collection' setting you cant pick something you dont own
