Porkins Abuse?

By Ribann, in X-Wing Rules Questions

So, as far as we know, Porkins' ability can be used at will when you receive a stress. For example, a PTL Porkins could do the following:

K-turn with Porkins

--Use Porkins' ability to remove stress

Push the Limit

--Use Porkins' ability to remove stress

I had a guy on Vassal use Porkins like this and he NEVER rolled a "hit". He had R5-D8 as backup, but never needed him. He did roll a crit, but a crit isn't the hit.

Anyway, just need a check on Porkins. Can he be used like this? I talked to a TO friend about Porkins in this way and he was like, "something is amiss".

Thoughts?

Yes, this is a perfectly valid way of playing Porkins.

Each time you eat a stress, it has a 3/8 chance of causing heartburn.

3 heartburns is lethal, unless you have R5-D8.

So, basically, he can fly around like a drunken fratboy and have a bad case of spontaneous explosions, or he can use his ability at a more measured rate.

It seems that your opponent was taking the first tactic, and possibly had loaded dice on Vassal.

Perfectly legal, if lucky :)

He did roll a crit, but a crit isn't the hit.

I'm not sure I understand this. I thought a {crit} was a {hit} in regards to abilities and cards and such.

Am I misunderstanding this?

The cards will specify if they want both the (Solid Explosion) and (Hollow Explosion) results to trigger the effect.

Alternatively, if the effect says "Suffer ....Damage", then the (Hollow Explosions) would still be relevant.

You are misunderstanding it.

An open explosion symbol and filled explosion system are two different things when a die result calls for one of them.

Wow! All this time, we've (my group) been playing it wrong.

I'm assuming the same thing is in effect for damage deck cards, though I cannot think of any specific cards off the top of my head, lol.

Thanks, guys!

Porkins ability only has a negative side effect if a hit is rolled, a crit doesn't trigger the damage result.

Already done this... he's great!!!

If you're lucky...

Yeah, I honestly don't know how we've never caught that before.

Does the same hold true, then, when a ship moves over or onto an asteroid? We've always played that a {critical} symbol was the same thing as a {hit} symbol in this circumstance. I don't have my rules handy to check on this. Thanks, and sorry to have derailed this thread a bit.

Asteroid damage is a hit or crit (respectfully) as per Moving Into and Through Obstacles, point 2, Page 20.

Yeah, if you're out of shields and happen to roll a [crit] when clipping an asteroid, then... dangit!

Back on topic: First time I ran Porkins I had a ball - I must have used his ability 5 or 6 times with no damage. I got really reckless and STILL didn't get dinged.

Next time, I'm sure the Dice Gods will catch up...

At least when the "dice gods catch up" you won't have to suffer long.

I can hold it... No I'm... *boom*

Porkins is awesome but luck dependent. When I fly him, I use his ability all the time unless he's only got 1 damage left. I seem to be very lucky when I roll that die :)

"There is no such thing as luck, there is only the Force."

Porkins is the bomb. Now my favorite Rebel pilot.

Here's a funny anecdote, I was playing Porkins against double Firespray list that had Scarlet and REbel captive. At end of the match Porkins had 6 stress on him.

Would have been hilarious to be about to die from focused fire, with 1 hp left, and said "Nope. I'm going to clear all of this stress, and roll this damage die 6 times and come up without a hit EVERY TIME".

(Note: I do know that Porkins says "when he would Receive a Stress Token", and so this scenario is not technically legal, but I'd allow it from my opponent, because awesome games are more fun than won games.)

This is not only legal, this is the whole POINT in playing Fatso (or was it Piggy XD)

With Ptl and R5-D8 he can go crazy on that stuff too.

Only thing that's abusing Porkins are his clogged arteries.

Heh heh heh.

I am really looking forward to trying this. Porkins with Outmaneuver, R5-D8, Hull Upgrade and flechette torpedoes. On the joust, hit with the torpedoes to cause stress on enemy. next round, K-turn behind stressed enemy (who cannot K-turn on you), clear stress, take action (TL or Focus), attack. Wish we could get double EPT's for the X-wings like the A-wings will have.

Does the card damage from his ability bypasses shields? Or do you remove shields first?

Edit: Sorry, found the answer in another thread!

No bypass shields?

You're dealt a damage card; the ability doesn't interact with shields.
