Help me figure out Battlefoam

By Vorpal Sword, in X-Wing

I recently bought a secondhand P.A.C.K. Plus , with the intention of making certain I could move my minis cross-country without damage. It came with some foam, but no slots for Wave 3 (or, soon to come, Wave 4).

So I think I want to order one Imperial foam insert and one Rebel insert , with the intention of getting a Wave 4 insert for both factions as soon as they put one together. But their website is a bit less than user-friendly, and I want to know the following:

  • Will three trays of any kind fit in a PACK Plus? The product description says it fits 6" of foam, which would logically mean three 2" trays or four 1.5" trays--but it looks like either would be an awfully crowded fit for the actual bag in front of me.
  • Will these two trays in particular fit the PACK Plus? The product descriptions for both of them ominously say "(Made for the Battle Foam P.A.C.K 1520XL, Air, 720, Go, 432, and 216 only)".
  • How quickly does Battlefoam usually put together trays for new waves?

Thanks in advance for any help.

You need to account for the 0.25" bottom of a tray, and the top liner too. So it may be 6" of foam, but it won't be four 1.5" trays. You need to do a bit of creative math with them.

The PACK 432 and 216 and 720 trays are 15.5" x 12" I believe (without looking). If the internal of the PACK Plus is the same, then yes.

BF often needs to wait until they can get the miniatures after they are released by the manufacturer, so it can be days/weeks before they put together their own trays and/or add them to the custom tray builder.

Personally, I'm going to wait until FFG slows down on releases before getting any more trays for my 432. I've got a few concepts for custom trays to fit a ton of product, but I need to see when/if/what is in a theoretical Wave 5 or other Imperial Huge ship release before committing to anything more.

  1. Not "any kind" but if you look through the foam trays there is a Star Wars section . All the foam trays have a suffix which is an annotation for either 2 or 1,5 inch thickness
  2. Yes
  3. Dunno, but they've already made some for the Huge Ships . However these are specifically made for horizontal loading in to the PACK 432.

I've purchased both the 216 and the 432, and now I am looking in to upgrade to the 720 in order to have everything in one bag (until the next wave........

Since you'll stack trays on top of each other, you should only have to worry about one top liner (if you worry about it at all). The main thing is as Slugrage calls out: add 0.25" to each tray you get. Getting 3 trays in the Plus is about all you'll be able to do unless you drop to custom 1 inch trays. With 3 trays, you're best bet is something like two 1.5 inch trays and one 2.5 inch tray. The total foam size of that is going to be 6.25 in (due to the bottoms) but the bags should have enough play to handle an extra 0.25", at least mine did. New Huge ships are in 3 in trays which may cause a problem for you if you want to try to get 3 trays in there.

Why don't you use your Vorpal Sword and - snicker-snack - cut one yourself?

Sorry, nothing constructive here. :)

I am planning to get some custom foam cut for my huge ships from a local guy who's trying to start a business with his laser cutter.

use the custom configuration software! you can save a TON of space.... many ships can be double stacked like Ys and A's...Ties can be put in a rectangle etc...

Anyone else planning on making super efficient Battlefoam once wave 4 hits? If so, are there any tips on ideal thickness or space saving methods?

I know X-wings can sit vertically in rectangles to save space. I think I would still make individual rectangles, probably 1"x0.5", instead of one long one that has all of them togethers.

Tips for super efficient custom BattleFoam;

Y-Wings and A-Wings: you can easily fit 2-3 in a 2" foam insert/slot

X-Wings/TIE-Adv/HWK's: 2 can fit on top in a 2" foam

Interceptors: you can easily fit 2 together in a TIE-Advanced slot if you interlock the squints like when you interlock fingers (I'll post pics later). One Intercetor also fits in a Y-Wing slot
