A FFG Star Wars Index

By Aahzmandius_Karrde, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Some of you have already seen this in other posts as I've posted links to use as reference on questions. Some of you may also have been familiar with my spreadsheet, but that wasn't quite cutting it anymore so I started to transition with a link there. But now I'm going to officially announce the site:

http://swrpg.viluppo.net/

This has been a few weeks of work, and I want give a big thank you to @bradknowles for helping error check and be a sounding board as I worked though permutations of ideas for how the site should work.

As stated in the front page, this site is by no means done. I still have Adversaries to put up, I'd like to make things like Weapon Qualities selectable so you can see all weapons with Sunder, and a few other ideas up my sleeve. I'm also open completely to suggestions of what features you'd like to see.

Again, I hope people will find this useful, and will enjoy what it brings to your game.

For anyone who hasn't seen it yet, this thing is huge. Our local group that I'm involved with here in Austin is already using this thing, and everyone I show it to has loved it.

Imagine every single weapon used anywhere in any of the FFG Star Wars games being put into a single table. A table that can be grouped by weapon type, and can be sorted by virtually any characteristic -- want to know which weapons do the most damage? Just click on the "Damage" column at the top of the page, and there you go.

Want to know how many Hard Points are available on all of the ships in the game? Just click on the HP column at the top of the page, and there you go.

We're not quite there yet, but there is already so much stuff that has been put into place that this is already one of the most useful tools I've seen in the game.

Just be aware that there are some known issues which are being worked on, and if you have any questions about anything that is referenced, please see the FFG book and page that are shown as the "Index" for each and every item.

great stuff! :o

Good googly moogly!

Well done!

Would you be averse to a different/lighter background color to that brown? For some reason it's a tad harder to read for me. Excellent work! I love that it'll work on the simplest smart phone at the table.

The choice was because it was the closest I could eyeball to the colors of table in EotE. Based on the AoR beginner book having a different color scheme perhaps a cookie stored option of color choice is in order.

This is a great link that I have already sent to my group even though we haven't started our first game yet. Was very helpful for character creation.

Interesting, in my core book they're greenish grey alternating with white. I didn't make it so I don't feel I have any right to complain, just throwing it out there for us old guys that can't see as well as we used to.

Ya know I'll admit that a) I have some color blindness issues and b) I've started at these tables so long my vision goes blind, but **** if you're not right. I know my intention was to make the tables look as close to the ones in the book as possible. I don't know where I got this brown from now. I guess it's kinda the color of the titles. /shrug

I'll definitely keep it in mind.

I appreciate the consideration! We joke at my table about the nature of finding things in the books, and this will be invaluable to us.

So does this look better?

That's gimp eye dropping right out of the Under a Black Sun pdf.

Playing around with the Inspector, I found that bumping the font size for the '.itemtable td' class to 14 px (ooh... you should be using ems :P ) makes the table much more readable. I have good eyesight but even 10 px is far too small of a font size.

I recommend snapping a photo of the book and using a tool like Adobe Kuler (or any other color palette/eyedropper app) to grab a hex value. I changed the '.itemtable tr:nth-child(odd)' background color to #C8C6C0 and it looks pretty close to the grey used in the book's tables.

The light brown from the book's cover titles would be #6B3419 but that's far too saturated of a color to use. I can't say I was pleased with any of the pastels of that hue so I'd stick with a gray.

Edit: The Under a Black Sun pdf uses shades of green for the tables. They look fine and would be a good choice if you don't want something too monochromatic.

Also, you used Arial when you actually meant to use Helvetica.

Or the AoR scheme from Operation Shadowpoint:

Browser font scaling is a wonderful thing :)

Of the two you posted, I prefer this one. However, the AoR one is quite readable for me.

Then the H1 text ends up taking up too much space. Browser zoom scales everything indiscriminately including the table cells and the padding.

I changed the body font size to 100% and, the td font size to '.825em', and the padding to '.5em'

Firstly, great work on this. The time and effort you have put into this shows and is appreciated.

I am wondering if you are going to make a non-internet available option as I can't allow internet access at our table for obvious reasons (online games, forum posting, etc) so I for one would appreciate a spreadsheet or pdf or whatever off-line viewing option (not exactly sure what option would be needed to keep it working like it does now).

Thanks again

J

If you print it gets rid of all the border stuff and leaves only the table. Gets rid of the drop shadow too since that'd be an extra bit of fluff on a printed page. Chrome will allow you to "print" to pdf, or there's plenty of pdf print drivers out there as well.

That looks reasonable for Gear, but what does the Vehicle/Starship table look like. Those tables tend to be much wider.

After:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/q17xhcunzi9urvc/Screenshot%202014-06-08%2016.18.07.png

This gets into a really pedantic area but I noticed that "Starships" is a H1 even though it logically follows the "FFG Star Wars RPG Index" H1 at the top of the document.

If .875em is too heavy, .75em for the TD font size would be similar to a 12pt font size but with relative font metrics for all screen sizes and browser zoom settings and splits the difference. That change along with the H2 change for the document subheader looks like this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/o8a4aj3tg1fnu7w/Screenshot%202014-06-08%2016.27.26.png

I think .875em looks more "modern" (14/16 font size and line spacing), in my opinion.

So I'll admit that a graphic designer I'm not. I took some of the suggestions. Though I had to fall back to smaller fonts on printing. The h2 thing should have been a no brainer anyway.

I'll put this out there: http://swrpg-test.viluppo.net/transportation/starships/category/41/

With the caveat that it is a test site, it might be borked at any time, and the data there is probably going to be out of date unless I need to test out a major DB overhaul for an upgrade.

A quick peek at what's coming soon:

You know, I've been tracking soak, wounds, and ammo in my Evernote templates with checkboxes - you might be able to do the same. Now, if I could just get them into scrivener.....

I've been laboring away at something VERY similar to this for months now, doing weapons, armor, vehicles, vehicle weapons, and adversaries on my iPad using Numbers & Pages, but this is even better! And you're doing adversaries as well?? My question is, if I use this page from my iPad, would I be able to copy/paste onto a page so I can create encounter groups together? Because that is the main reason I am doing this project to begin with, I want to be able to grab a couple things, throw them together on a page and keep everything together without having to write down notes for the combat.

If you have a Windows PC, you can use the snipping tool to grab an image of the stat block and then paste the various images onto a single page. I used to do this with the online D&D Index when I ran 4th ed.
