Cracken: incredibly underrated, or just not that good?

By iPeregrine, in X-Wing

Can you chime in on the Apex Predators thread? I'm trying to convince people that BSPs are better off with Outmaneuver.

Not that thread but useful anyway: Outmaneuver does more damage than one reroll from predator: link

There are two assumptions:

  1. Outmaneuver triggers (firing arc condition).
  2. Predator gives only one reroll, not two.

That calculation uses three attack dice plus focus or TL. Which does not fit BPS.

Would another valid assumption to be added be that if either of those 2 things are false that predator wins those scenarios?

If 1. is false (i.e. outmaneuver does not trigger), predator certainly wins.

If 2. is false (i.e. predator gives 2 rerolls), I think predator is better. Someone needs to calculate that. Maybe I'll look into it.

That calculation is only about 3 attack dice with token. We also need to look at attacks without tokens or 2 attack dice. With 2 attack and 2 rerolls, predator is exactly like TL. And predator has a bigger effect without offensive token than with focus.

Cracken, Outmaneuver, hull upgrade, 25 points for a mini-wedge with combat squad leader.

This I like. Sure, he's not as good as Wedge who always reduces and has an extra attack, but he's also 6 points cheaper for the Wedge/Squad leader.

Hmz, 2x blue, Airen with outmaneuver and HU, wedge and squad leader. Might be fun to take that for a spin, just for giggles.

I'm not a fan of outmaneuver on a z-95. Your dial isn't all that great and you don't have any boost or barrel roll options to react to an opponent's move. And with Cracken you're tied to range 1 of whoever you're boosting, limiting your maneuver options even more. I'd much rather just spend those points on predator for an ability that always works instead of hoping to get lucky and land out of arc of your best target.

Well, you can easily use the Cracken effect on Wedge, who he can stay close with. Squad Leader Wedge and he can give out an action at range 2 during combat should you so choose. :P.

I'm not saying outmaneuver is the best, it was mainly to show that you can build a pseudo wedge on the cheap quite easily.

I played this list at the final game at a AaIA event today:

http://geordanr.github.io/xwing/?f=Rebel%20Alliance&d=v3!s!67:54,53:-1:-1:;75:18,-1,-1,60:-1:-1:;0:56,-1,59:-1:-1:

Wedge Antilles (PS9) w/Outmaneuver and R7

Coran Horn (PS8) w/PTL and R7-T1

and

Airen Cracken (PS8) w/Wingman and Ion Pulse Torpedo

Having a defensive Atromech on an otherwise VERY offensive Wedge made him work as a sort of Biggs, drawing all the fire/attention away from Horn and Crackn who were able to line their synergy up very nicely for a decisive kill or 2.

So Cracken certainly earned his pay today for me ;-)

I can see how doing 3 actions a turn (with no stress as well) on a ship with 4 base actions (5 if you count the Droid boost) could be fun

Ohhh, it was :P

It felt like an Interceptor on steroids, especially when he performed his second attack. As someone noted: why not give him Fire Control System: Then he would have TL on the 2nd or "re-attack" in the End Phase, potentially with a Focus and on Range 1

Airen + SL

Garven

Dutch + Ion

Jake + Chardaan + PTL

Been thinking of this list. Want to give it a spin:

Cracken with swarm tactics, cluster missiles 25 points

Biggs with r2-f2 28 points

Garven 26 points

Rookie 21 points

Like a list mentioned earlier, Cracken, Garven and the droid ensure Biggs has 3 agility dice and 2 focus. Cracken can use swarm tactics to boost Garven's PS if he needs to pass the focus quick, Biggs a PS boost if he needs it to get in the final shot, or the rookie the boost for a +6 boost to PS.

Just lost to:

Cracken + SL + cluster

Jake + VI + Outmanuever + Test pilot + Refit + hull

Tarn + r7 + proton

Bandit + cluster

Big alpha and Jake is one tough little bugger to wrangle. I think I'd go ahead and put PTL on him instead of VI and Hull but that's the just the interceptor pilot in me talking. Loads of actions. Tarn is annoying as !#$@ with that R7 too.
