I WON MY FIRST GAME!!!!!!!!!!

By Shanester40, in X-Wing

Like a few other people on here I have been playing for a few months yet for various reasons my first win had always escaped me, and whilst I was still getting enjoyment from the game I was starting to think a win would allude me. Until last night at my weekly game night with my buddy who is way better at picking lists than me, he chose Slave 1, Lambda, Tie Interceptor and 1 standard Tie. He didn't have many upgrades, just anti pursuit lasers on the shuttle. I ran with Biggs, Rookie and two dagger Sqn's with advanced sensors and ran out winning by a point.

So a very narrow victory but a victory no less. The so what of all this is to all those with similar frustrations, is to keep at it, choose a simple list that you are comfortable with and practice, watch videos of games and fly casual!

Try using that squad over and over, and go here on FFG and read the mans tale that actually won the world champs with that squad and youll be better than anyone in your area.

Congrats :D
That seems a very popular list. Rebel swarms are nasty to deal with, and B's with AdvSen is fantastic. Definitely find what you like about the list and "evolve" the list to better suit your needs

I love hearing about newer players victories. It pains me to know that some times a person might walk away from the game just because they get a bit downhearted about losing. When that happens, the Community on the whole loses something. Congratulations.

I've played 4 games against my Brother so far. He is Rebel so I took up being Imperial (getting used to it).

First 3 games I was completely stuffed. Not helped by me making plenty of mistakes.

This week we had the fourth game. 6 TIE's against 3 X's and a Y.

We got down to one ship with one hull point each. He won. But I ran him SO close.

Feeling a lot better after the previous games dousing my excitement.

I'll be getting a Defender as a gift soon, but I'd like to win with the TIE's first. It's doable and now I've got more confidence. Just need to learn my pilots abilities and stick with my gut choices.

The best concept I've found in X-Wing, as in many other games, Keep It Simple. Too many upgrades and elites can be a challenge to run effectively.

And congratz Shanestar40. Well done. :)

More important than keep it simple is keep it cohesive. Each upgrade on a ship should have a purpose. If you're running Tactician on a Firespray run Ion as well. The 5 points equal much more than either upgrade alone. If you're running an upgrade that adds an action don't add another upgrade that adds another action. No Expose and Engine Upgrade.(Granted, don't run expose ever) synergy is efficient. Adding a bunch of random conflicting upgrades is not. But still go for minimalism.

Congrats Shanester40 :)

As was said up a few posts. Now that you've had a taste of victory, keep flying that list. Even if it doesn't win, keep flying it.

IMO the true beauty of X-Wing is how deep the game play really is.

It's part list building, because a bad list can win, but you have to work so much harder at it.

It's part strategy, what will you do with your list? How do you plan on winning with it?

It's part tactics. Because no plan survives first contact with the enemy, if that long. :)

It's part poker. Because a bit part of it, is figuring out what the other guy is holding... Or in this case where he'll move next.

It's part spatial awareness. Knowing what maneuver to pick to get all your ships where you want them to be, to achieve maximum effect with them is a skill in of itself.

The better you master those skills the better you'll do at X-Wing.

Congrats Shanester40 :)

It's part craps. Because no amount of good play will make up for Red Dice with only blanks.

Congrats Shanester40 :)

That attitude helps nobody. The dice win you one game every once in a while and lose you one every once in a while. But careful attention to what the dice do and need to keep them rolling as well as possible is part of the game. Modify your dice. Don't blame them when they fail you. They've failed us all from time to time. Expect it. Plan for it. Build for it.

I was just pointing out the luck factor that was missing from the litany.

I thought that was part of Poker.

I thought that was part of Poker.

For Poker I was thinking more of the bluffing/reading the other guy then luck.

But yeah luck does play a factor, it's one you can have some control over, but there are times where the dice are hot or cold and the best flying won't change that.

Dice don't stay cold forever. Yes, one bad roll can cost you the game. The more bad rolls you get the harder winning is. But if you outfly your opponent for long enough the dice are more likely to come back as they are to fail.

I actually won my first (and so far only) match. It was only 55 points each side, because that's the best we can do right now. I had Fel with Daredevil and two Obsidian Squadron wingmates, my opponent had Biggs and a Blue Squadron B-wing. They went down having dealt only two points of hull damage to one of my OSPs. I suspect it was because my dice rolls were good and I kept using Focus, but I was also working hard to keep my firing arcs overlapping and to stay out of his.

I strongly suspect that reality will hit me hard in my next few games.

After a string of about 6 or 7 straight losses (including two against first time players) I'm on a two game hot streak. Maybe I should retire.

Looking forward to my second tourney on Sunday, going to play my winning list, hope I just manage one win but just really looking forward to playing against other people!

just really looking forward to playing against other people!

If you do lose, make sure and ask the other guy if he can give you any advice or point mistakes you made. Can help you do better next time.

That and the more upgrades you have the more likely you are to forget the upgrades you paid for and you usually would be better off increasing your PS or squeaking another ship in

Congrats.. With that first win comes the bug to play more often, and to hopefully WIN more often.

But, but . . . Isn't out flying you opponent unsporting?!!

:P

I can't believe we are on page 2 of this thread and no one has said this yet. "Great kid! Don't get cocky!" Ok now we're good.

I remember my first beer.

Congrats on the win
