List Tweak or New??

By Soontirbeblownup, in X-Wing

Hi,

So, I did well last weekend with:-

Gamma Squadron, Siesmic Charge and Flachette torpedoes x3

Soontir Fel, Ptl, Targeting Computer

Now the one thing I noticed is that with a lot of PS4 squads and my 98 points although I was shooting first I used guesswork for the bombs a lot. So do I stick another Flachette on one of the bombers? Or Upgrade to Proton Torps? Or even maybe run with Proximity mines on one of them instead for 99 points and still possibly have initiative?

Or do I change completely and run:-

Royal Guard Pilot, Ptl x4

Which I flew at game night and had a lot of fun with?

Both lists are fun to fly and can catch people out but am thinking that the Royal list is fairly well known and is a real Glass Hammer list!

Actually, just had a thought... If I drop Fel down to a Saber Sq pilot, I can still give him Ptl and have enough points to upgrade to proton bombs! Imagine the sheer joy of a formation flight in behind the bombers and dropping payload to dish out those face up cards! It might only happen once, but it would be fun although not for opponent!

Cheers

Couple thoughts: It's kind of strange that you want initiative for this reason: Soontir DOES NOT want to have initiative. Bombers DO NOT want to have initiative. With the new rules revisions, you can choose if you want initiative if you have the lower points or win the toss-up. With your squad the way it is, I might pass on initiative to give the bombers the ability to target lock more often.

I would also shy away from playing 2+ bombers without Jonus. Most players would say bomber wings aren't worth their points, but I have had and seen great success with 3-4 bomber lists. 3-4 with Jonus, all with Assault Missiles and Seismic Charges can wreck a TIE Swarm and even deal some pretty significant hurt to a 3 or 4 X-wing list. the issue with ordnance is its reliability. Adding Jonus really increases your likelihood to connect, or Munitions Failsafe will make it not hurt so bad when those missiles whiff.

The 4 Royal guards list is really good and lots of fun. I also recommend Soontir next to a 5-TIE swarm with Howlrunner.

I did like the squint zipping around taking pot shots while bombers were going about their business, gave opponents more to think about than just what bombers were up to. Also the Flachettes are mainly point fillers, it's nice if they connect but if they don't no big deal as they draw attention away from the bombs, and oyu'd be surprised the amount of people who forget about them

I like it, I can definitely see opponents getting distracted by the stresses from the Flechettes and running straight into the bombs the next turn.

Regarding what to do with the last two points, I don't think I've ever seen Prox Mines used so I can't really comment on their value. You could change TC on Fel to Hull Upgrade or Stealth Device, I find I only use it once or twice a match when I have him outfitted with it.

Which is why I'm edging more towards Proton bombs instead, imagine the carnage!! lol

probably won't happen now at all :( doubling up on flachette could worry opponents more though, not sure really

I played at a mini event recently with

Soontir, PTL, ST

Jonus, Homing missiles

2x Scimitar, Proton torps.

Highly recommend the higher PS's for stripping shields/tokens before bombers let rip.

I am looking at taking flachette missiles next,

My biggest concern is, stress over actual damage. Especially as they are one shotters,

Um. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I have always felt Soontir DOESN'T want initiative, so he can move later and arc dodge those PS 9 pilots.

So that makes his choice a bit less strange. I agree that Bombers without any type of action support (be it Jendon so they can TL early or Jonus for the rerolls [or both]) and most missiles is not the best idea. There are worse ideas though. I just need to get more bombers so I can fly them more often.

Changed it a bit.

I'm a big fan of the bomber in social games. They really shine in groups, but ordnance can bite back if the dice aren't hot.

Actually, thinking about running a list in the league I play in with a bunch of bombers and Howlrunner. Adding a little durability to similar firepower, and shooting before most of a TIE swarm.

I run Soontir PtL, Turr VI, 2x Scimitar Seismic. Few points left for spice to taste. Can add Hull or SD to Ints, or flechette to bombers, or upgrade to prox mines. The bombers do a good job corralling and controlling with bombs, and providing more HP to the list, the ints flank, dodge, and mop up.
