What kind of pilot abilities would you like to see

By Dagonet, in X-Wing

We all theorize and speculate about specific upgrades and EPT's but specific pilot abilities are not often discussed.

So lets discuss some and see what we can come up with for FFG to use as inspiration. :P.

Personally for instance, I'd like to see:

A pilot that k-turns while barrel rolling as a kind of half loop.

A pilot that sets his dial only after all lower ps ships have revealed theirs.

A pilot that gains an attack at R3, but gives an extra green die at R1 instead of the usual bonuses.

Use red dice for defense, standard hits count as evades, crits count as two evades.

Gain a free evade after you perform a red maneuver (not just gain stress).

Enemies in your firing arc may only convert one die using a focus.

Just off the top of my head. they seem useful but not greatly op compared to what we have, except possibly the first one.

A named TIE or Interceptor pilot that is middling PS that gains +2 evade die whenever it would normally be granted +1 so long as that source was not from an upgrade. So, you'd get +2 for being at range three, or through an asteroid, or behind a Transport, but not from stealth device. This would put a very high emphasis on skillful maneuvering and evasion (which the Imperial flavor in this game was made for anyway).

"when defending, if you would gain bonus dice due to obstacles or range, add 1 green die"?

That might actually work just as well as an EPT, it's nice but not overpowered if you have several pilots with it. An ambushing squad of Sabers or GSP's would be nice with this, darting in and out. Nice one.

When attacked by you (or attacking you) or just generally in your arc?

Just generally in your arc, sort of a hybrid of etahn and carnor.

-When defending at range 2, add 1 defense die

-When you reveal a [K-turn] maneuver you may receive a stress token to place the template in the rear guides. Do not rotate the ship 180 degrees if you use this ability. (you end up with 2 stress)

-When you reveal your maneuver dial you may take a free boost action. If the revealed maneuver is not a red maneuver receive 1 stress

-The first time you are declared as the target of an attack each round, remove one focus or blue target lock token from the attacker

-When attacking a ship with stress, the defender rolls 1 less defense die.

When your ship would overlap another ship base or an obstacle, you may assign one focus token to your ship.

YES. This. Yes. I can also see that being some kind of upgrade.

Some ideas I just thought of on the spot:

Pilot abilities of all enemy units with range X are ignored. *note: I avoid specifying a range because I don't know how balanced each range will be*

Every time you score a crit result on an enemy ship and would hit a shield, it hits the hull instead

You suffer no negative consequences for having your base or movement template land on an asteroid

Once per turn when rolling dice, you may change a single blank result to a focus result. This may be done with either attack or agility dice

When you would take a face up damage card, look at the top three in the damage deck, and pick the one you receive

You may complete a red maneuver despite having a stress token. You still gain the additional stress token

When you collide with another ship, if you are a 8 or higher pilot skill you get to roll 1 evade die. If you evade you retain your actions

I'd love a pilot (or an EPT) who can spend a focus to clear a stress token. If this were on a low-PS pilot, you could pair him with Garven Dreis or Kyle Katarn and it would be a great combo.

When your ship would overlap another ship base or an obstacle, you may assign one focus token to your ship.

How about "when your ship would overlap another ship base, you may remove one focus or evade token from that ship"?

You may use the (left) or (right) arrow moves instead of a forward for your k-turn. Must be the same speed as your revealed kturn

Nothing fancy really. Just an imperial ship that gives an evade or barrel roll action to a ship in range 1-2 if he has the action listed in his action bar.

Oh my god, yes, really yes. Any token passing or action passing at all.

I think it's high time we got a defensive reroll pilot skill, I would love to see it on an A-wing, interceptor or Advanced.

One that lets me "fly casual".

"If an attacking ship in arc and in range 1 to 3 declares an attack using a missile or torpedo card, you may immediately make a primary weapon attack. If you roll any hits or crits the attacker must make a primary weapon attack instead."

In essence shooting down the attacker's ordinance a la TIE Fighter, but they still can attack and don't lose the missile or torpedo so it isn't too powerful.

You make take a stress token to win the game.

Points: 3

Sounds fair.

After you perform an action, you may suffer a stress token to perform that action again.

You may spend an evade token to reroll your evade dice at Range 1

For every critical hit you deal, you may instead deal a face down damage card and add an ion token.

After performing a green maneuver, remove all stress tokens from your ship.

Increase the range of bomb damage by 1

After beginning of the activation phase, roll an attack die. On a hit result, choose one enemy in your firing arc and deal one damage card to it.

At the start of the activation phase, choose one enemy ship at range 1–3 and state aloud which maneuver you believe it will make. If you are right, gain one attack die and one Evade die until the end of the round.

Might be a tad OP, but

"At the beginning of each turn you must choose a ship from within your firing arc. You then must chose to receive either that ships P.S. OR its pilot ability "

I think this would be really cool, and add an interesting dynamic to the game.

Shoot Down (EPT): When defending, if the attacker is using a missile or torpedo and is within your primary firing arc, you may make an attack with your primary weapon. For every (hit) or (critical hit) result you roll, you may cancel one (hit) or (critical hit) result as if you had evaded them. Once all results have been applied, roll your evade dice as normal.

Who's using this ability? Ditto?

Ditto uses Transform!
