Need some clarification about Proton Mines

By EmpireErik, in X-Wing

Does the critical damage inflicted by a proton mine bypass shields? Please point to the reference...

I thought I read this within this forum, but I cannot find the refernce.

Accordingly, based on the proton mine card, I would have to say no.

Please advise...

From the FAQ:

Suffer Damage vs. Deal a Damage Card
An ability or game effect that causes a ship to suffer damage is different from that ship being dealt a Damage card. Suffering damage occurs as described on pg 16 of the Core rulebook, and this damage is applied to shields first as normal. A ship that is dealt a damage card is simply assigned that damage card, regardless of how many shields it has remaining. For example, the effect of Proton Bombs deals one faceup Damage card. Damage cards dealt in this way cannot be canceled by evade tokens, redirected by Draw Their Fire, etc.

Google "FFG X-Wing FAQ."

Or head to the Support page from the main X-Wing page. There is actually a bunch of great resources there. Stands true for most any FFG game, really.

Effects that deal a damage card go direct to hull and bypass shields. Proton Bombs, Porkins' pilot ability, etc. In fact, you may see a lot of post on the forums regarding a hull upgrade on ships like the E-wing, A-wing, and Z95, as they only have 2 hull. A hit from a Proton Bomb deals an instant critical damage card even when the ship has full shields, which could be a Direct Hit card, instantly destroying these ships from full health.

So the next logical step: would also be that a ship that hits a mine, or an asteroid and suffers damage, that damage damage bypasses shields and goes directly to hull?

Sorry to sound stupid on the issue, but as an Empire player I have little experience with the shield affect, and suspect ALOT of people play this wrong.

Your answers affect a gaming group... Thanks in advance...

"Damage" will hit shields. Dealing a damage card bypasses shields.

If an effect says it deals damage then it is treated like any other damage and will remove a shield token if there is one.

If an effect says to deal the target a card then it is not inflicting "damage" in the rules sense, it is going directly to dealing a card.

Ditto, what Forgottenlore said. If you follow the instruction on the cards, you usually are on the right. If the card instruction says that you received a damage card (that right away indicates that it by-passed shields). Damage cards on pilot indicate hull damage,

So if a proton mine bypasses shields, then a seismic mine does also... then does inpacting an asteroid?

No. Again, read that FAQ entry. If you "deal a damage card", it bypasses the shields. If you "suffer damage (or critical damage)", it goes to the shields. There are two very different wordings.

Proton Bombs and Porkins are the ONLY cards in the game that Deal Damage Cards.

EVERY other form of damage thus far is Suffered, and thus hits Shields first.

Keywords, people.

No, you are confused. When the card says deal damage, it goes to shield first (if any) then hull.

However, when it says deal "damage CARD", this goes to hull directly - regardless of any shields.

Read the cards carefully and destinguish the words "damage card" to just plain "damage".

Hope this will clarify your confusion.
