How Do You Pronounce "Executor"

By Lagomorphia, in X-Wing

In the swedish translation of "heir to the empire" vaders flagship is named "bödeln" which translates to The Executioner.

Translations tend to lose meanings, though. I'm not so sure that would really determine which pronunciation it should be. Though, I'm curious as to how to pronounce bödeln

Eh, for all we know Anakin Skywalker was none too good with spelling and grammar being that his early education was as a slave on Tatooine. He picked the name based on his poor understanding of it because he thought it sounded bad arse (or bad ass if you prefer). After all, it's better that everyone would think of scary Vader and not li'l Annie.

What the actual hell is going on? I genuinely cannot fathom how people manage to dig up these random threads.

There seems to be a new pattern of created a profile just to necro an old thread.

Interesting thread though. Is Vader's ship named after the person who deals with a dead person's will, or did whoever named it not know how to spell Executioner?

I am surprised this hasn't been posted yet...

It's pronounced "ex-egg-u-tor".

Okay, back to the topic...

"An executor is someone who is responsible for executing, or following through, on an assigned task or duty." -Wikipedia

It's a legal term. I am guessing since it was a (the) flagship of the Imperial fleet, it was responsible for "executing" the oversight of the fleet and/or war.

I think "ek-ze-kyu-tor" sounds a lot better spoken out loud. And it makes sense, since Executor-class star destroyers are the executors of the Empire's will, whether for the safety and security bringing joy to its loyal subjects, or bringing destruction to upstart rebellions.

If it was called "executioner" I'd pronounce it like "Execute-or", but it's not, and I think that pronunciation (whether correct or not) just sounds...clunky, and therefore not as badass as a Super Star Destroyer should sound.

Kinda like executive...'cause that's the boss's ship

Ex cute oar

ex eh cute or.

Ex as in ex wife.

Eh as in Canada. ;)

Cute as in my little pony.

Or as in "...or else!"

It's suposed to invoke an executioner not an executive! :D

Executor is someone that carries out policies in other words execute orders. So the President of the US being head of the Executive Branch would be a prime example of an executor.

Executioner is some one that carries out executions. Now executions has 3 definitions, probably the most well known definition involves the organized killing or death sentence of a person. However the word execution can be used in a manner that doesn't pertain to someone dying.

As I mentioned upthread 8 months ago when this thread was first active, there is an archaic definition for the word "Executer" that has the same meaning as "executioner". Most dictionaries also seem to provide both pronunciations as valid for the real world word.

Given the pattern of other Imperial Star Destroyer names, Avenger, Agonizer, Bellicose, Devestator, Evicerator and so on; which pronunciation do you think the name is meant to be, a professional killer or a lawyer.

(cue at least one lawyer joke now).

At least this one pertains to a topic that almost never comes up.

The worse ones to necro are those that have been dead for months in the original form but which seem to get repeated every two weeks if not more often. Fixing Ordnance is a prime example just like Fixes for the Advance had been.

You pronounce it with a Pommy accent and an air of self importance, like a butler at a grand ball.

egg-ZEK-you-turr

perfect. I was scrolling down and finding all o the other phonetic breakdowns pretty unsatisfactory, and had cobbled one together in my own head and then - bam, here it is, exactly as I had it.

Nice work, wulf. You're obviously an extremely inteligent and capable person.

i feel so popular!

This is probably one of my favorite posts in recent history.

Sexecutioner

NANANANANANA NAAAH......

"How do you hide money from a hippy? ........................put it under the soap!"

I think there are 2 ways to prononce it

1) with an English accent (the Exec-Q-tore is having tea)

2) like Stan Lee would (EXEC Q-TOR!)

I like to think Emperor Palpatine used both pronunciations. When pitching the ship to the senate, he called it the Exec-utor, but to Lord Vader and his troops, The Ex-ecutor. Thus, both sides are correct :)
