Newbie question --- Y Wings, Hawks?

By Raensleyar, in X-Wing

Both use Turrets.

Do NOT run a Blaster Turret without a Recon Specialist.

Or Garven Dreis/Kyle Katarn.

Or Garven, Dutch, Kyle. I flew that and won my Imdaar alpha event with 9 others and made top 16 at regionals. Easy to fly and as long as 1 ship get's an action someone else is benefiting.

Garven

Dutch + Blaster

Reb op + Recon + Blaster

Airen + Squad Leader

Picture in recent FFG strategy article made my day. http://www.fantasyflightgames.com/edge_news.asp?eidn=4851 It seems someone was using 4 hwk list in Worlds 2013...

On serious note I love my HWK (and my killer robot), and my Y-wing will hit my mailbox soon. But they both are support ships, you add 1 to your 4 ship (or more ship post wave 4) list as force multiplier, like someone already said in this topic if enemy doesn't shoot it it can do nasty surprises, and if enemy focuses on it your strike ships lives few turns longer and does damage, it gives your list more tactical depth.

One thing that has been forgotten here is, along with an Ion Turret, also put an R2 Astromech on your Y-Wing. It will improve your maneuverability greatly to almost that of an X-Wing.

I've had success running Kyle + Recon + Blaster + MC + Opportunist.

It's rather nice throwing four dice with a plethora of focus tokens to back them up.

I've not tried it, but I would imagine that Horton Salm could be fairly self-sufficient with the Blaster Turret.

I love this build. I run it with Biggs and Garven and it leaves most people scratching their heads wondering what just happened to them. They're a tough trio to put down and no-one expects a HWK to pump out 4 attack dice - love it!

I have a deep love for the hwk. The more times I use it the more it grows on me. My last game it won me the game. Last ship left took down a bomber to clear the board. My favourite loadout: Rebel Operitive + ion turret. Cheap and I like it a lot. Some people have said use a Y instead but it just didn't feel as good. Ramble over.

The thing is, I have never needed a red manuever on a Y-Wing when I have had a turret. I use the R5 and it is useful in most fights.

I have and he works very well with it. His ability is basically a 50% strength TL which makes up for spending the focus for the turret. Toss a torpedeo on him for the opening salvo and well he is fun but to expensive.

An Ion turret on a Gold is awesome; however, I think you should use a ship to do what they were designed to i.e. put an advanced proton torpedo on one and go big game hunting. You could hang a glorious b-wing, shuttle or YT-1300 pelt on your wall. Y-wings are robust enough to deliver a well timed blow while your other ships dog-fight.

"Rebel Package"

2 Rookies

2 Prototypes

1 Gold + Advanced Proton

or

"Big Game Hunters"

2x Gold + Advanced Proton

2x Blue + Ion Cannon

I think you can fly a Y-wing effectively without a turret. Look at Horton Salm’s special ability, “When attacking at Range 2-3 you may reroll any of your blank results." Boy, that sure would synergize well with some range 2-3 proton torpedoes. What do you know? The Y-wing can arm itself with two of those. Make sure you focus before firing those protons and you should have no problem bringing a TIE out of the sky. For good measure, you could also bring Wes Janson along and strip the planned target of their focus/evade tokens before getting off your protons with Salm. I haven’t tried this myself, but I am planning on getting some games next week and will post a battle report if anyone is interested.

Y-Wings and Hawks are support ships. Dutch, and all 3 hawk pilots do very well with ion turrets, while the Hawk can take a Blaster Turret I only recoomend doing so in epic play where the cost of Recon Spec, Turret, and the Moldy Crow Title aren't so prohibitive. Kyle with that kit out in Epic is AMAZING!

Dutch combos incredibly with the CR-90 or anything with Weapons Engineer.(the one that grants two target locks.)

Just remember that they are turret ships and should be flying with as much erraticness as possible. A Y-wing 1-2 range behind an enemy B-Wing can walk it off the board. Especially when stressed.

Jan is best setup, personally with an Ion, Nien, and Squad leader. She offers a boatload of support that way.

Roark with an Ion can be really mean.

Hwk Roark with ion turret. 24pts 5 health and 2evade dice

AND

Roark says who shoots first. enjoy

Used Horton Salm with a Proton Torpedo & Flechette Torpedo as one of my escort ships in the Rebel Transport mini campaign.

He performed above expectations, high PS, PT for alpha strike and flechette for endgame. Rerolls ensured a good number of hits on both. Put a crit on a bomber that prevented him getting off his missiles. Expensive, but durable and hard hitting.

Which is why I think that saying the Y-Wing is a support ship isn’t giving the ship the credit it deserves. Flying as support is only one of the Y-Wing’s uses. The Y-Wing can easily be the power house of a squad. Even if you are not flying Salm, placing torpedoes on a Y-Wing is still not a bad idea because Y-Wings are more durable than X-Wings. Just bring Garvin along if you aren’t flying Salm and it won’t be hard to focus and target lock before firing a torpedo. Once again, if you are worried about return of investment, just add Wes Janson to the mix and strip the enemy of their tokens before you fire. In this instance, the X-Wings become the support ships. If you are worried about the Y-Wing becoming the main target, I’d throw a missile on an A-wing for distraction.

I love the Y-wing, it's actually my favorite rebel ship! I very much enjoy putting an Ion hit onto my opponents best ship and watch him fly helplessly away from the fight. Sure it's slow and easy to hit but it can take a beating and has the turns to Ion and circle around your opponent to keep him Ioned. I have very good results from XXBY lists in takin out imp's and even imp swarms. Garven and Dutch are a very nice combo.

The problem is a list like this can get boned by matchups. I was at an Imdaar Alpha I had Carnor Jax and Dark Curse in my build, against a Ten, Garven, Kyle build, I felt sorry for my opponent as soon as the ships were placed. We called the game after Ten and Garven went down, because that hawk would never kill DC and I still had all 3 of my Interceptors up so it was just a matter of taking 2 more HP off of Kyle before I lost 3 Interceptors with PTL

Salm will be fun (haven't played as him yet) the temptation for me is too strong to put a turret on him after he has torps already, though maybe with Z-95s out 30+pts for a Y-wing wont bother me as much
