Using Marksmanship

By Raensleyar, in X-Wing

So,if i am understanding it correctly, Marksmanship is just an enhanced form of focus. So, first question is whether its worth the cost for that ability to get a critical hit? and, if so, which rebel pilot would benefit from taking marksmanship?

Also, is it better to take marksmanship versus, say, Expose?

Thanks!

There's a search bar at the top of the page. There's been no small amount of discussion on this very topic, so happy hunting.

Expose isn't a very good PTL. It takes your action AND lowers your agility. Focus is better than just an extra die with no Focus.

Marksmanship goes VERY well with Luke. He doesn't need Focus for defense, so the offense only Marksmanship action fits his current abilities.

There are many that like to take Marksmanship with named YT pilots as well, and use it with gunner.

Marksmanship is more an offensive only focus.

Cause u cant use it in defence.

Edit Was quite multipled sniped! =)

Yes, Marksmanship is an enhanced form of focus. And it works on all attacks this round, not just one. But unlike focus, you cannot use it when defending. It is useful in two scenarios:

  1. Attack more than once in one round: Gunner, cluster missiles and Corran Horn.
  2. Synergy with critical hits: Maarek or Kath.

Corran Horn can use it. The classic HSF list starts with Han, gunner and marksmanship.

Expose is crap.

Marksmanship shines with gunner because it will work for ALL attacks you make in a round. It could also work really well with Corran Horn, who can potentially have a second attack at the end phase.

It also has usefulness on pilots that have synergy with crits - such as Ten Numb, or Marek Stele.

Expose is crap.

I happen to like expose in some circumstances. I've used it with Han in the Falcon with a gunner, and for that action, I was able to roll an extra die up to 4 times per turn.

We call it superfocus, because we almost never use focus for defense where we play.

Expose is crap.

I grant there are a few scenarios where expose is worth a 2nd thought. For it to be better than focus, it requires something else which increases firepower.

Edit:

With Han reroll, expose does indeed result s in more less offensive power than focus/marksmanship. Probabilities to get the number of hit/crit results:

                         0 1 2 3 4 E
4+Han reroll 0-2 0,04 0,17 0,26 0,42 0,11 2,38
3+F+Han reroll 0-2 0,01 0,08 0,24 0,67 2,57
3+F+Han reroll 0-1 0,00 0,02 0,49 0,49 2,46

Against 2 or 3 green dice without tokens, 4+Han inflicts less damage than 3+F+Han.

                  0 1 2 3 4 E[hits]
4+Han vs 2 0,1840 0,2473 0,3133 0,2142 0,0412 1,6814
3+F+Han vs 2 0,0929 0,2397 0,4074 0,2601 0,0000 1,8346
4+Han vs 3 0,2767 0,2721 0,2761 0,1493 0,0257 1,3754
3+F+Han vs 3 0,1828 0,3026 0,3521 0,1625 0,0000 1,4944

Summary: Han benefits from Marksmanship more than from Expose.

Edited above post to fix calculating errors.

Marksmanship is very useful on ships that have either:

a: more than one attack per turn or

b: have special rules which make critical hits more effective

Examples would be any ship able to take Gunner, Corran Horn, Ten Nunb...

Riddle me this, mathwingers: how does Expose fare on Corran + FCS?

Riddle me this, mathwingers: how does Expose fare on Corran + FCS?

That's exactly how I plan to use Corran the first time I'll try him and pair him with Cracken, Kyle, Garven with R2-D6 Vi or Dutch so he gets a TL or a focus for his frst shot also.

hmmm

Corran Horn + R5P9 + FCS + Expose

Garven Dreis + R2-D6 + Veteran Instinct

Kyle Katarn + Blaster Turret + Recon Specialist

I can see Expose being used a lot more once the 2 EPTs at once A-wing upgrade comes out. A-wings with PTL and Expose could make them a lot deadlier

If I'm tricking out an A-Wing with two EPTs, I'm betting Outmaneuver and/or Predator will give a larger bonus. I'm not great with the maths, though, so I can't say for sure. I can't wait to try Tycho with PTL/Outmaneuver and Jake with Outmaneuver/Predator.
