Factions

By Tidy Fender, in X-Wing

Apparently deflector shields greatly improve performance in-atmosphere.

Well sure. But I also think Chess would benefit from a third faction. 500 years is a long time to wait for expansions.

Edit: reading that back it sounds more harsh then I meant it to.

I would love to see a "Fringer" faction that has access to various independent type ships as well as some older stuff but that can't take the mainstream fighters like TIEs or X-Wings, but it seems unlikely to happen.

On the other hand, I would also really like to see a compatible (or at least similar) game set in the Twilight Imperium universe, which is actually a really good setting and already has more than a dozen distinct factions to draw on. But that is another conversation.

Try this one. Actually looks pretty good and includes (among other innovations) 6 different "factions".

A Twilight Imperium miniatures game would leave me broke and homeless on the street with nothing more than a couple bags of minis and a starfield playmat.

Even if it never makes the tournament circuit, mix'n'match squadrons could make for some wicked fun games nights.

This.

I don't think the tournament scene is anywhere near being done, or dried up, or what have you. If anything, we have just barely - and I mean barely - started to scratch the surface of this great game and the tournament scene that goes along with it. But that being said, it would be fun to see a wacky tournament sometime where you could field any units you want.

I know, I know. It's sacrilege to even say or suggest such a thing - but it would be fun. ;)

I don't think enough like the prequels to make it worth investing time and effort into making them.

I'd personally not pick any of them up.

I would have to agree,Hobojebus, that the prequels aren't up to snuff for me, as well.

That being said, here in the past couple of months, I've been watching the animated Clone Wars on Netflix, and I have to say, they have some pretty sweet looking ships I wouldn't mind seeing introduced into this game.

My interest in Star Wars has rarely seen story prioritised. It's always been ships, aliens, planets, tech, and lore. And the prequels have some pretty fancy (and more colourful) ships designed by some very talented artists. I'm also keen to see if they should and how they could give droid pilots a some kind of distinguishing mechanic, which again, could see play in the GCW era with Droid TIEs.

I'm still thinking an expansion that takes it atmospheric and into the ground game wouldn't be the worst thing I'd ever heard of.

I know most TIEs perform like crap in atmosphere, but that's why there are AT-ATs and AT-STs.

1. Just like Epic, we could see a slight variation on the standard rule set. With this would be some new scenarios; attack shield generators, make bombing runs, etc. Adding a little more spice to the game in an opt-in/opt-out manner.

2. It allows FFG to produce memorable OT vehicles in a reasonable scale (star destroyers are never going to happen). AT-ATs, AT-STs, etc. It gives the Empire their 'big ships'.

3. Whilst the standard /base game is about fighters, I don't want to get bogged down with a choice of 50+ fighters for each faction to choose from. Nor will consumers feel like they are getting value in constantly purchasing repainted vehicles with a different card or two in a pack. In addition, a lot of people are drawn to this game because it is Star Wars. When we stop seeing those memorable ships on the board, a lot of people will be reluctant to join/continue playing.

But the topic of a ground based game has been discussed several times before ..

Regarding the prequels, I wouldn't be so sure that they should be counted out in terms of potential popularity, but I'd agree that we shouldn't count on prequel ships happening as a foregone conclusion. As a crusty old guy, I'm not sure that I'd want them to come out, but I can't speak to the popularity of them with a younger generation.

But, I think we should get back to the topic at hand, being the plausibility of the introduction of a third faction. It seems to me that 'The Fringe' has always been an integral part of the SWU, and we already have hints of it in the Firespray and the Outer Rim Smuggler. Someone else also mentioned the HWK earlier, and the thought of the Wilde Karrde in a different thread.

Honestly, I'm not convinced by any of the arguments against, and I really wonder why FFG wouldn't want to cash in on a Fringe faction. I suppose it might depend on their internal capacity to hire the people to develop them.

what about the remnant?

after palpatines clone is kill...............wait, i forgot they shot a torpedoe down the EU exhaust port.

forget i said anything

so many ships down the road it isn't really easy to add new factions because the others already have such a head start that they would have to really push the new faction in terms of releases, which might unbalance the whole release scheme, at least it will become hectic.

I see only two practical options:

a) release two separate new factions, e.g from the prequels or some other time period (perhaps the future movies depending on timing)

this would allow for an own release plan independent of the existing, at least if you keep it separate. Might be something they look into when the current time phase is depleted. I personally hope they would never allow matches crossing time periods, but since they already allow mirror matches (sigh), you never now. Besides, another fork (another because the huge ships already present at least a half fork) might split their consumer base too much.

b) a third faction, fringe/pirate/smuggler with partial reuse of existing ships

with a faction starter kit containing 1-2 new ships, new pilot sets for the yt1300, firespray, hawk and perhaps some of the more common fighters, a few game mechanics reflecting the fringe character of the faction you could jump-start this faction to an usable tournament faction in a relative short time. After that you can release stuff in parallel for all three factions.

This would involve reuse of models, which they didn't do until now, and possible some redefinitions of some existing stuff, e.g. making some things rebel/imp only etc, which they also have been cautious with. So, I don't know they are willing to do that. The uniqueness of the factions can still be kept, just not in the intersecting set of features.

personally, I would prefer b) since I think it would be doable, fit the universe and wouldn't unnecessarily split the universe further. But I also think a new faction is about as likely as a star destroyer in the game and also for much the same reasons, if they planned to do that at all, we would already have them as it would have been easier and advantageous from a marketing standpoint from the get go.

Yes, your option 'b' is also what I've thought they should do. I'd add the Z-95 and the Y-Wing to the list too. Hell, they could encourage people to make some uglies from existing models as well, like the Y-TIE.

I don't think it would be difficult at all to make some or most ships exclusively Rebel or Imperial: just don't print pirate pilot cards for them. Ultimately it all comes down to the little team logo on the pilot card.

It has never really been a problem for other gaming companies to add new factions to their games. Ogres were made an army in Warhammer 20 years after the games initial launch. Warmachine just added Convergence to their faction list last year and have announced plans for another new faction. Malifaux added Gremlins as a faction and has simultaneously upped the number of Masters for every faction to 7 and expanding the pool of models in all factions. I think Fantasy Flight is more than capable of handling it.

The HWK should also be a merc ship. Kyle Katarn, the HWKs most notable pilot, even worked for the Empire first. I have been a proponent for a third faction since the games inception, leaning most strongly towards the Zann Consortium. I feel an additional faction could only help the game, especially if that faction has its own quirks effecting the meta.

He was a stormtrooper befor jan showed him the lies the empire fed him about his father.
