Phantom de-cloak, re-cloak, de-cloak chain

By MrHello, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I was playing with the shiny new ship I won, and I put on advanced sensors. Since when two effect resolve at the same time I can choose which to resolve first, that means I should be able to de-cloak before taking an action. After doing that, I can activate advanced sensors, and re-cloak the ship as my action. Can I then de-cloak the ship again, performing a second barrel roll/straight? Since de-cloak doesn't count as an action, I'd say there isn't anything I've seen in the rules preventing this, but it seems like that would be really broken.

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty certain it isn't going to be allowed. Just have to wait for the FAQ on why. Maybe.

Yes.
Advanced Sensors and Decloak both trigger before you reveal your maneuver dial.
Spending your cloak token is not an action, and is therefore not subject to the "Once per round" rule.

Expect a FAQ Errata post on this subject, but I thoroughly look forward to seeing someone sprint forward/sideways by 5 (2 + Base + 2) before executing their maneuver (like, say, a Koiogran). That will get you a Range-1 blast from behind the round before they thought combat would be possible!

It would be glorious to get this resolved prior to the release of Wave 4 for the sake of Regionals. Glorious I say!

The thing preventing it is probably timing. Decloaking and then recloaking with AS is fine as far as I can see, but the immediately before you reveal your dial trigger has come and gone by the time the new cloak token shows up, so I don't think it will be available for use until the next dial reveal comes up. Will have to wait for the FAQ to be sure, though.

Of the half dozen threads asking this that have popped up since cloaking was spoiled this one is probably the best discussion of it.

Basically, the prevailing theory (and the one that makes the most sense from a game balance POV) is that, like Dr4co said, the timing doesn't allow for the second cloak token to be gained while you still have the opportunity to decloak so the trick doesn't work.

From the FAQ:

A game effect can only resolve once per opportunity. For example, Luke

Skywalker’s pilot ability applies “when defending,” so he can only use his ability
once against each enemy attack.

The first time this question came up, the FAQ referred to "card abilities" only resolving once per opportunity instead of a "game effect," and the question was whether Decloak was a card ability. Now that the wording has been revised, I don't really see how this is still a debate.

Yeah I remember that, because it was a Token, some people argued that it wasn't a card effect so that didn't count.

But with the new wording, clearly the intention is clear. You can only use a given effect once per trigger, so you can only decloak once per reveal of the dial. That does however also mean you can decloak then cloak with AdvS

Still has its uses

Not according to the latest FAQ (page 13):

If a TIE Phantom uses Advanced Sensors to perform a

cloak action, it cannot immediately decloak.

Sorry, read the OP the wrong way around. My bad. Sorry.

Indeed. I was wondering why a bunch of these had suddenly resurfaced. Everybody now has definitive answers to this.

Yeah, please - for the love of god, people. Just let this thread die. ;)
