What has JJ done to the X Wing?

By Gosric, in X-Wing

I think it's the best idea in the world to keep some things similar in design. Someone also mentioned in another thread that we're still using Planes that are 50+ years old. I'd like to point out the F/A-18, which was put into service in 1978, is still in Service today as the F/A-18 Super Hornet.

I think using similar designs brings a continuity between movies and a relate-able experience for viewers. This is something the Prequels really didn't do well (IMO).

The Super Hornet is a different plane, it just happened to borrow heavily from it's parent. That being said, the F/A-18 is still in use by many countries. Australia is waiting on the new JSF's to replace their aging F/A-18's.

Also remember that military aircraft do change shape in later variants. Just look at WW2 fighters for examples of this.

In other words, its an evolution of the F-18 platform. I think a similar parallel can be applied to the X-wing in EpVII.

[Real World] F/A-18 Hornet >> Super Hornet = T-65 X-wing >> Super/Advance X-wing [star Wars]

Looks like its a modded X-wing with larger intakes

Has anyone else ever wondered what intakes are for in the engines of a space ship?

Well they have been shown to function in atmosphere as well.

No doubt something to do with generating/maintaining/manipulating the Etheric Rudder

Anyone who says the EU is crap is plain wrong.

It's one of the best upgrades you can put on a ship like the Lambda Shuttle!

Plus, JJ Abrams obviously agrees, he's clearly building an X-Wing with an Engine Upgrade!

No, the EU sucks. That's why no one wants to switch to the Euro.

My first year at University someone on my floor had an article up talking about "Political Correctness". I was seriously confused because it didn't seem to be talking about either Player Characters or Personal Computers.

Then, of course, there are the constant confusions on this board between Jan Ors and Outer Rim Smugglers.

That's why I always call Ors by her nickname "JJ".

I still haven't figured out what she's done to the X-Wing?

I never understood it honestly. possibly more surface area for engine cooling? your guess is as good as mine.

I expect the Imperial Remnant to be the main bad guy with like a hint at the coming of the Yuuzhan Vong. Who may show up around Episode VII, and Episode IX will be the last battle between them,

Regrettably, I have very low hopes for anything Star Wars in the future. Star Wars died for me on April 25, 2014 when the EU was destroyed.

You MISS Xizor!? Good riddance to 90% of the EU. Soooo much of it was just pure crap. It started with just ok books by Zahn and was just full of drivel most of the time.

I'm pretty sure the short nose on the x-wing is because it's a flat prop of the ship used at the back of a shot not a 3D version, that's why the nose looks normal length in one photo and short in the 2nd photo.

or as an example for a bigger plane, take the B52, in service since the fifties and with the latest retrofitting and design upgrades expected to be used into the 2040s.

All in all you can keep a base design for any of the known star ships 30years or not, put some small detail changes in to indicate the time progress (and even if it is just the time to tinker on your ship) and your done. Besides the Star Wars Universe never was known for rapid changes, at least from looking into the past, the EU tried a more progressive approach.

I can't see them building a large scale X-wing model for battle/space shots. I would think this is as has been said before, either a cockpit model for putting pilots in for shooting internal shots, or a background prop which can be an odd shape to make it look right on camera.

Star Wars died for me in 99 when the fail menace.....bla bla

Most importantly, at least to me, is that JJ Abrams will have been (is) the chosen director for movies in two of the most iconic, most known and loved science fiction universes ever, Star Trek and Star Wars.

Wow!

JJ made a utter mess of Star Trek!!

He has no clue what Trek is and it has been made clear through dialogue and events in JJ Trek 1 and 2 that he know *beep* all about the source material.

Sure they were entertaining but they are NOT Trek, about the only real good thing to say about them is "Yay, some space ships on the big screen FINALLY and after how long with none"

I agree, Abrams' Trek movies to me didn't feel Trek at all.

However, it has been pointed out that he never was a big Trek fan but WAS a Star Wars nerd growing up. Combine that with what we've seen from Episode VII production so far and I'm oh so cautiously optimistic.

And yeah, SW died for me 5 minutes into Episode I. I left the theater feeling like Lucas had knocked me down and kicked me repeatedly in the stomach. But at least he was consistent with II & III... :(

I liked the new star trek movies by Mr. Abrams, though you have to remember that he's the director and NOT the screen writer. Any problems with the storyline is not his problem, just adapting the story and script to the screen, which I think was done very well. I don't have a problem with the 'new direction', since i'm only a casual Trekkie.

Well despite all the let downs and set backs, it appears to me their is still a lot of Hope around here because the Star Wars Universe Appears to be Thriving. ;)

I wouldn't be surprised if the new X-wing model in VII is smaller (and more compact) than the ones used the the Civil War. As technology improves, it also tends to get smaller. ROTJ gives us a great example of where snub fighters are heading... the A-wing. It's fast and maneuverable. Years later, the A-wing's speed and size is married to the X-wings power and strength.

It would be the equivalent of the F-16 back in the day. Proven technology from multiple fighter jets is made smaller (and faster) and placed in a single fighter. The USA cranked out a ton of them because they were so much cheaper than the F-14 and F-15s, and could perform all the same tasks! So a new X-wing that somehow combines the strengths of the A-wing and the previous X-wing would make sense.

Hence the E-wing...

Either heat venting in space or air intake in atmosphere. Also they look cool, and that was probably good evough reason for Lucas back in the 70's.

This is most likely a new model X-wing, with elements borrowed from McQuarie's concept art.
