Field Size

By ghaerdon2, in X-Wing

Hi my FLGS has tables 2'6" x 6' at the AoIA they chose to run more tables instead of doubling up the tables, and so created a 2'6" x 3'6" playing field for X Wing; played lengthwise.

Has anyone else encountered stores modifying the 3x3 to suite their needs? And do you think this is right?

And do you think this is right?

If they don't have 3x3 tables.

Part of me thinks, if it's a matter of 2.5x3.5 foot I'm not sure it's going to drastically change the way the game plays or give someone an advantage.

But another part of me thinks that if you're going to run a gaming store, and host an event, you really need to have the proper sized tables... I mean you can't play 40k or most other games on a 2.5 foot table...

The better solution would be for the venue to get some boards they can lay across the tables to expand the play area. Pink insulation foam board is a good way to make a lightweight playing surface. They can be painted, just don't use spray paint (it will eat the foam). A 4x8 sheet is like $10-20 depending on thickness (1/2"-2") at Home Depot. Cut them in half and boom, 2 lightweight playing surfaces.

I made a personal board out of plywood since most of my tables are too small. My problem is I used 3/4" plywood. Its too heavy and cumbersome when transporting. I'll probably redo it at some point.

I was kind of surprised that they did this at this event.

Last time there was more people and they slid two tables together and taped off 3x3 and it worked out fine. The last event they had 16 players I believe.

This one was 10.

I think they were expecting more to show which didn't happen since there were so many stores along the east coast having to same day event.

I was a little disappointed that the play area was smaller, but I think it worked out fine.

The main thing is everyone agreed to it., but I mean when I have to drive for a couple hours, I'm not going to turn around and go home lol.

Hopefully next event they come up with something.

Not sure if you attend their Monday night games, but if so, casually bring it up.

You can get boards cut at home Depot.I think for a 4x4 was like 4-6 bucks.

I wish they had those awesome gaming mats. I'd love to buy one if a store sold then. Shipping to my place costs as much or more than the mats themselves

We had an unofficial tournament a few weeks ago as practice for AoIA, and the FLGS made some 3x3 panels out of paneling for play areas. They worked just fine, but for the Imdaar Alpha tournament, she had some Hubble images printed up and glued to the boards, and sprayed with a gloss coating. They really look nice now.

If your play surface isn't 3 x 3, that could really screw up some builds and the strategy that goes into them. Especially if anyone is trying to do that rule of 11 timing.
