What does a typical Regional Tournament look like?

By TheWanderingMiller, in X-Wing

I've never been to a Regional and I'm not sure what to expect. My regional is coming up in July and is about 5 hours away. So I'd like to know a little more before I make the trip.

I realize this is dependent on how many people participate but on average: How many people compete? How long does the tournament usually last? And how early do they tend to start?

Thank you

Well, the last round of regionals had many more locations participating, so past attendance really wouldn't be much of an indicator of what to expect this year.

Very true. I know that some of the 2014 US Regionals took place in May. Can anyone who attended one of those events provide some insight?

If there are more than 32 players (and less than 64), which will often be the case at a Regional this year, expect a likely scenario of five rounds of Swiss and then a cut to the top eight.

In Ohio, we had 40 people. With that many, FFG wanted six rounds of Swiss and a cut to top eight.

There will actually be a regionals within 6 to 7 hours of my area, so I'm considering going.

I saw the prize support, plus I'd enjoy it just for the experience & battles alone. :-)

My question is, does anyone know what the prize support for World tournaments are?

I know I'm counting my eggs before they hatch, but I like to dream. Plus its not a dream if you turn it into reality. ;-)

The Regional in San Francisco was about 36 players. 6 rounds of swiss (70 min/round), and cut to Top 8. There were no breaks in between rounds so you played essentially from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm non-stop. If you made Top 8 (and chose to continue) you played another 4+ hours. Dallas Parker won the event, and he finished after midnight.

Expect to see very good x-wing players, and be prepared to play about 8 continuous hours.

Well, Nat's is now known:

Top 64: Alt art Chewy

Top 16: Red range ruler

Top 8: TL

Top 4: Red templates

Top 2: Backpacks

I'm a little fuzzy on the 16/8/4, but those are the prizes. We can extrapolate the following for worlds:

Top 64: Alt art imp card (my money is on Vader)

Top 16: ____ colored range ruler (my guess is not blue, green/yellow, or red... maybe purple?)

Top 8: This one is kinda wide open, no clue what it would be

Top 4: ____ colored templates (same color as above)

Top 2: Messenger bags?

Given this is just a guess... I like how they're doing it... handing out a range ruler for being good, and then getting the matching templates for being awesome. I'm surprised to see though the red at the UK nats... I would have expected them to be blue, and then worlds to be red again, but obviously they're not keeping the same color scheme year to year (or perhaps they thought that giving out top 16 to nats wasn't exclusive enough so they wanted this year's top 4 to be really special, thus the color change, and in the future red will be nats)

It was closer to 45 players, we had a bye person so it was an odd amount. We continued on for the top 8 finishing my semi final against Dallas around 11:30 pm.
