Tournament question regarding catching an illegal build halfway through round 1.

By rowdyoctopus, in X-Wing Rules Questions

True enough, but strange things can happen.

I know this past tournament I had 0 sleep the night before.

So I could have easily overt looked something. How I got second place, I still don't know

besides, it would take forever for a TO to collect lists from everyone and enter them ALL into a squad builder to verify, assuming he/she even had access to one at the venue.

Players definitely should be going over lists with each other before the match or as they deploy each ship. What upgrades they've got can drastically change their function and/or target priority, so glossing over them makes no sense.

Get in the habit of saying what the upgrade is as you list them. "Wedge has the engine upgrade modification" etc. If you say it all out loud, either you or the opponent will hear the redundancy before there is harm or foul.

After building a list using whatever program, physically lay the cards all out. Add it up manually. Then flip the upgrades over and make sure all the symbols correspond to this available slots (with the exception of mods, of course).

Just to touch on the idea of putting squads through a squad builder to validate, Voidstate actually has a few flaws (Wedge + R2-D6 = two EPT slots according to the website right now), so relying on that to filter isn't without its issues either.

For what it's worth, I make it a point to enforce tournament validity as much as possible in my builder (except for implementing Limited cards which I will get to someday...). If a tournament-illegal list can be created with my builder, please let me know!

Aye, (Yet Another)'s very well coded. I don't know about Voidstate's popularity, but I know where my loyalties lie.

Kid should have been placed in carbonite and carted off to the spice mines.

I had a similar thing happen in a casual chess competition (in a school). The guy used an honest mistake to nab a win from a game he was clearly losing. In the end, he scored second instead of third, but no one wanted to play him afterwards, so he basically lost a whole chess club (and the club lost a player).

Mistakes happen and if the final prize is only a small piece of plastic then I think it pays to find a good compromise to solve an honest mistake. That way everyone is happy and the community grows :)

Congrats to the TO for handling that well in my opinion.

Reminds me of when I audited my son's Rogue Trader character (he was 13 at the time). He overspent xp, so we just put him on an xp spending freeze until he earnt them. Remember that the 13 year olds of today are the gamers of tomorrow!
