The Great Debate #36: Ancient Spear vs. Lamp of Alhazred

Even though I will always have a soft spot in my heart for the Lamp, and it's defintely one of my favorite weapons, the Spear is simply better. A -1 for the combat checks buys you the most versatile weapon in the game. And it's $1 less, too. If I'd be told I can choose any weapon I want for my investigator, but I can't get any more weapons during the game, I would choose Ancient Spear over any other weapon in the game (unless I'm a spellcaster).

What do you think?

We're all busy and the forums are acting up. Part of what's wrong is that people are avoiding the threads because they don't want to see you start bumping the thread when nobody responds. People will come if you let them—don't worry.

Anyway, Give me the lamp. Most monsters don't have magical resistance and immunity, so the benefit of the spear's physical aspect isn't as great as the disadvantage of not having it available if you had to make it magical once this turn. Nice to see the weapon lasts the entire combat instead of just one combat check, though.

As awesome as the spear is, I think I actuall prefer the Lamp for the reason Tibs stated. Magical Resistance and Immunity doesn't come up all that often, so the extra die from the lamp will probably add up to far more than the 'extra dice' that the spear provides over the course of a game.

There are enough magically resistant/immune monster to make not a having a physical weapon really annoying and damaging. Even a common Warlock has magical immunity.
