Fantasy X-Wing Draft

By Crabbok, in X-Wing

I was thinking of a new type of tournament - the Fantasy Draft - based on Fantasy Football.

for this example I'll go with a small 4-player tournament, and assume t hat each player has at least 1 of every ship. The host of the tournament would design 12 ships (3 for each player) of varying cost and upgrades. Players would start with 100 points, but they would use those points to BID on which ship they'd like. And since this is fantasy - players can get both rebels AND imperials.

The order might look like this:

Han Solo (YT-1300) - Mercenary CoPilot

Krassis Trelix(Firespray) - Autoblaster

Ten Numb (B-Wing) - Advanced Sensors

Lieutennant Lorrir (TIE int) - Shield Upgrade

Horton Salm (Y-Wing) - Ion turret

Howlrunner (TIE) - Stealth Device

Luke Skywalker (X-Wing) - Elusiveness

Captain Yorr (Lambda) - Engine Upgrade

Tycho Celchu (A-Wing) - Expert Handling

Maarek Stele (Tie Adv) - Push the Limit

Jan Ors (HWK) - Blaster Turret

Tetran Cowell (Tie Int) - Adrenaline Rush

You'd start at the top of the list and let players bid. Some players may end up with only 2 ships, some may end up with four. after all ships are bid out, players play each other in a tournament with them.

Thoughts?

I thought of that first as well - but I also wanted a good way to get people to fly stuff that isn't quite so common. IE SO many people use Tycho and Push the Limit - why not change it up a little?

I also think the list needs to be longer. With having only 12 ships for 4 people, it is possible that some folks might try to save points and end up getting screwed. I think a better system might be that each player has a maximum number of ships - maybe 4 ships max? then draft until everyone has four.

I can see something like this (although mixing sides really does not make sense to me). I would maybe run it where you draft your ships in blocks of points. Lets say you are playing 100pts. You then have lists of ships that are 50pt blocks. Players then draft their ships from their chosen faction and play. What could be interesting is as the person running it you can set up ship blocks that are not the norm.

It's an idea from Fantasy Football - you draft players from any team, any division - free to mix and match.

I bet biggs would go for more than he's worth, he's in soooo many rebel lists.

thats a good point ships with not so pouplar upgrades would be good to see

will see if anyone at my FLGS would be intrested

i see alot of people play magic draft night (not knowing how they play the game) it looks like the open a pack of cards have a bit of time to sort them then play could that work for x wing you pick up a pack of poilt card and upgrades (alternative art to make it interesting) or a list poilt cards and upgrades in a envlope take 10 mins to make a list then play

or is it to late at night for me to be on the forum

What you are talking about, I believe is called a Swiss Draft. And that is fine too, but would involve some other setup difficulties - How do you design each booster, whose cards do you use, do the players give you the cards back at the end or do they play using their own cards?

I really love this idea, thanks for sharing.

i was thinking 6 or more people show up for a night of fun you pay $5-$10 for a pack of cards (poilts and up grades) every one who shows up to play brings there own ships a min of 2 of each small 1 of each large. The packs could or could not be marked Dogs or Scum. best of 4 wins

dont know if it would work as FFG would need to be involved but i think it could fun and i like the idea of getting alternative art cards

whats the best way we could make a draft work playing x wing friday and would like to know how to explain it to the other's

Yea we are on round seven. My local group is doing one for the summer. So idea is TM dude!!!

I'm just messing with you. Send me a PM. I can let you know some dos and don'ts for playability.
