Went to am Imdaar Alpha tournament on Friday night, Top Deck Games in southern New Jersey. Had a great time, and managed to come in first! I've been tweaking a bomber build since the Wave 3 store championships started. Last time I fielded it, I went 0-3 and I was hesitant to try again. This time it went 4-0 and I went hope with a TIE Defender.
The build is:
Scimitar w/ Assault Missile (x2)
Jonus w/ Concussion MIssile
Jendon w/ Adv Sensors and ST-321
I was shocked to see 18 people (great turnout considering there are Imdaar events all over the local area all three days), and only TWO people flying Imperial! The other guy had a 5-ship build mixed with TIEs and Interceptors.
People in general were very surprised to see bombers and a shuttle. I was more surprised than anyone that they went 4-0. I flew an incredibly slow game, bumping the shuttle 3 turns in a row to hold it as far back as possible while passing off locks to every bomber. I got the assault missiles off on the same target on the same turn (either turn 3 or 4, depending on the match) every single time.
I don't remember all of the specifics of the builds I faced but they were:
1) A 3-ship rebel build, I think XYB with Biggs, Dutch, and Ibtisam
-- I wiped Biggs out with 2 assault missiles, and then put a hurt on Dutch with the concussion. Cleaned up the rest in due time.
2) Kyle Katarn and 3 Y-Wings, all with blaster cannons (this guy came in 3rd)
-- The player held Kyle back but tried to split the Y-wings in 3 diff directions at the last second. Misjudged it, and they all just barely got clipped by assault missiles anyway. Shuttle came up big in this one vs the Y-wings but got caught out of position in the end, and after the dice went cold, I barely finished off Kyle with my last remaining bomber to keep the win.
3) Standard XXBB "Biggs walks the dogs" --
Both X-Wings were gone during the first engagement, and it just took some time to clean up the rest.
4) Chewie w/ Han copilot and hull upgrade, Ibtisam, and another B-wing (dagger I think) (this guy placed 4th) -- Chewie rushed the slow bomber wall, getting just close enough to negate the concussion missiles, but I threw my assault missiles the lone big ship anyway. I rolled INCREDIBLY hot in this game. I may have only failed to score a hit one time during the entire engagement. I was well into Chewie's hull after the first pass, after which he luckily landed on an asteroid and I finished him off with 2 turns of bomber potshots, trying to hold on in the face of the arriving B-wing fire. Once 2 bombers went down, the shuttle found itself very out of position, leaving the last bomber to face the last B-wing. Luckily the shuttle did jam up the B-wing's movement options quite a bit, and the bomber came through.
I don't remember the build for the 2nd place either, but I know it def had an HWK w/ Roark as the pilot, and at least 1 B-Wing.
I was very surprised to see so much usage of HWKs and Y-wings. They were mixed into rebel builds all over the place. Only 2-3 people flying Falcons.
It was 1AM when we finished up and both myself and the 2nd place guy had hour+ drives, so we did not play the Imdaar finale as we were all tired and did not want to force 3rd and 4th place finishers to hang around waiting for us to be done playing with their prizes.
