No doubt there's been lots of speculation on big ships...

By Myranda, in X-Wing

For next wave of releases.

Big ship speculation aside... how much is left for fighters? From around the Rebellion period

From my knowledge of Rebel fighters there are... T-Wings, M-Wings and H-wings left (otherwise they're minor variations on A-Wings, Y-Wings or X-wings)... and backgound on the T-Wing was that it was supposed to be a replacement for the A but wasn't as good.

For the Empire - the Starwing, Missile boat, (which wont gel well with the TIE series stuff), Scimitar Assault Bomber (combining "scimitar" and "bomber" could be confusing), TIE Agressor, TIE Vanguard (a tie with 1 attack dice and 1 shield?), TIE Hunter (TIE Interceptor with shields and missiles... so the TIE Defender?).

The ARC fighter? Some were still around after the clone wars period, could go to either side.

In short it seems they might soon have released the bulk of fighters that anyone cares about...

So where do they go once that happens?

Aces 2 for both sides? So Ace X-Wing and Y-Wing releases? Ace TIE Bomber and TIE Defender box?

Otherwise it's time to look at significantly different eras Perhaps Naboo fighters, Jedi Fighters, TIE Predators and Automated TIEs?

I think this is more interesting area for speculation than an Imperial huge ship (though I'd imagine there would be two - one about the size of the transport, and one big enough to put moving turrets on)... so what do other people will think will be released as starfighters in Wave 5? And how many waves are realistically left?

Two words:

Episode VII

Two more words:

Not yet

Based on the YT-1300, Firespray, and the Star Wars LCG, FFG seems happy to count bounty hunters and mercenaries as "Imperial" while treating smugglers and gunrunners as "Rebel", so there's plenty of room to add additional small and large ships within the timeframe.

In addition to what you've already listed, there's Cloakshape Fighters, Preybirds, Starvipers like the Virago, Aggressors like the IG-2000, and even AT-STs and AT-ATs if they're willing to dip into atmospheric combat.

For the Rebels, the E-Wing's counterpart is the K-Wing, and then there's the YT-2400, Sorosuub yachts like the Lady Luck, and patrol boat-sized vessels like the A-24 Sleuth that made such a big splash in the LCG, while Snowspeeders and Cloud Cars could accompany the walkers.

Turrets for both sides (fixed turbolasers for the Imperials, Hoth defense emplacements for the Rebels).

And then, of course:

Episode VII

FFG spend a ton of time preparing for each wave plus they wan't release a VII themed wave a full year before the movie hits theaters.

And sadly, we don't know if Disney would extend FFG's license for new content or if they would cancel it altogether...

And sadly, we don't know if Disney would extend FFG's license for new content or if they would cancel it altogether...

Sigh.

There's little evidence for precisely what is covered by the license, but it's at least plausibly all Star Wars content. There's also little evidence for what Disney will or won't do with the license, but it's at least plausible that (since there's no in-house business that does what FFG does) it will be held by FFG for as long as the arrangement is mutually profitable.

If they did there would be a great disturbance in the Force, as millions of voices cry out in anger. I fear something terrible will happen as countless millions rise up and rebel against this evil empire.

See... I know very little about the EU. I see these threads and look up the ships on Wookiepedia. Most of the time, I feel like they pale in comparison to what we already have and struggle to find what they would bring to the game that we don't already have. I'm not saying they can't or won't, but I'm not seeing very much to get excited about.

But I could have said the same thing about Wave IV. However, once I saw the models and what each one could do, I became really excited. So I'm just gonna wait and see what they come up with. I'm sure I'll continue to be pleasantly surprised.

As has been mentioned in many previous speculative threads, Star Wars: Rebels is coming this fall. The Ghost is a potential great ship to release to tie in to the release schedule.

.. And how many waves are realistically left?

Last time I checked, there were six unaccounted for FFG product codes based on what was known, and the Rebel Aces product number. I haven't gone back to check in a bit, but that was accurate a month or two ago.

There are more expanded univserse stuff to choose from (K-Wing et al) and they could even dip into the slight-past and give us a V-wing, I'd be happy with that.

When it comes to Imps, it gets exciting! TIE Sentinel, TIE Droid, TIE Hunter, TIE Aggressor..on the other side of the coin, we have the StarViper, Skipray and more BH's in the form of the IG-2000, Hounds Tooth etc...

Yes, that's right. Call me hopeful, but I think that is Wave 5; along with two large ships for the Imps (conterparts for the GR-75 and CR-90). Time will tell!

Outrider is coming. Given the Lambda stands as the lone large of its wave, it's possible it that stands alone. That being said, the Skipray Blastboat could be a turreted Imperial large ship, and it meets my criteria below.

The best way, I think, to predict what EU they'll go for is to look for good-looking ships (or at least, not near objectively bad looking ships) that are either recognisable EU staples (the Defender, the Z-95, the E-wing, the HWK-290) or allow FFG to do something interesting (Phantom). I'd be on the lookout for another cloaker too. Obscure ships that show up in one game are unlikely. Assault Gunboat, Missile Boat, I don't think we'll see those.

Outrider I reckon's very likely, and Skipray's a possibility. Beyond that, can't call it.

Or until Disney buys FFG; then they won't need a licensing arrangement.

I'm thinking YT-2400, StarViper, IG-2000 and.... some other rebel ship

As far as the future is concerned, I believe episode 7 is coming out next year so I don't think they will have a problem coming up with enough stuff until then.

Even in a worse case scenario in which Disney pulls the license, I would definitely keep playing this game for years to come. There's already so many options and strategies to choose from. I doubt that they will though since FFG is basically able to print money with this game. I believe its the second most popular war game on the market right now (after WarHammer)

I very much doubt that. Warmachine holds quite a significant market share. Then there's lots of excellent games such as what Mantic is offering, Inifinity, Malifaux, Flames of War, etc. I would expect that most of these have an equal or greater market share than X-Wing.

I'm not so sure eltnot. I dabble in many of the games you mention, and (anecdotal, I know), none of them have attained the saturation in my local area that x wing has achieved in a very short space of time. I even have non-wargaming friends asking if I'll show them how to play.

I wouldn't be surprised if x wing has overtaken everything else. It's cheap to start up, easy to get to grips with, no painting required, and lots of tactical depth. A winning combo.

iirc, it goes 40k, x-wing, warmahordocrap, attack wing, WHFB

I also have looked up most of the mentioned ships on wookiepedia. I think the next wave will be from Rebels. Incluidng that TIE carrier, which makes sense as it's a completely new mechanic. So does the Ghost.

Your millage may vary, but I've found that most wargamers don't tend to play all that often in shops. Nor do the shops run events for them. Where I live there are regular events being held for other game systems that are attracting larger numbers than X-Wing. And unless you run in those circles, you wouldn't know about it as an X-Wing player because they use different venues.
