CR90 As Asteroids

By Handler, in X-Wing

Hi there,

The Tantive IV rule book states on page 7 under Using the CR90 as an Obstacle:

Players may use the CR90 ship as an obstacle instead of as a Rebel ship during a standard game [emphasis mine]. To do so, flip the shield token to the starfield side and follow the rules for adding obstacles described on page 20 of the core set rulebook, with the following change: one player places the CR90 first instead of his three asteroid tokens.

The CR90 obstacle is not controlled by any player. It uses the rules for overlapping and obstructing described under the "Huge Ship Rules" section of this rulebook. It does not move, and it cannot be attacked, damaged, or destroyed.

My 2 questions are:

1. Is this (ie will it be) legal for standard tournament play?

2. If so, in rebel mirror matches can both players place one of these on the table instead of asteroids?

Thanks

While it is not strictly tournament legal TO's can make it so. Even then Imps can place them the same as rebels.

1. Not in FFG standard play tournaments.

2. Yes, but only outside FFG standard play tournaments.

I've been wondering this as well. What is the difference between a standard game and standard play? In other words, where is the information that says I cannot use this in a tournament?

I would love to have other terrain besides the standard six asteroids. I'm just getting so sick and bored of six bloody asteroids in every bloody battle!

I'm hoping FFG will release an alternate terrain pack with mines, debris, crippled starships, escape pods, weapon platforms, space stations, ship yards, gas clouds, and other terrain to make every battle unique and interesting and even beautiful.

Ok, so by default using the Huge ships as obstacles is no allowed in a tournament. There is an option for the tournament, if published well in advance, to allow it but this needs to be made quite clear ahead of time. So if none of the tournament announcements said anything about that option, it's not legal.

Using one does give swarms quite the advantage, I should point out.

Once again, if the rules for the huge ships say we can use them as obstacles in standard play, why can't we use them in a tournament? That's like saying we can't use large ships in tournaments because the original rules says we can't.

The current rules say if the ship is out we can use them, therefore the rules insert is added to the rule book upon release. So where are you guys pulling the ruling from that says they can't be used in tournaments.

This isn't me arguing for them, but I would prefer to have something better than "no you can't use that, just because" when my opponent wants to use them.

Because that's the way FFG worded things in the announcement. And the tournament rules discuss asteroids and only asteroids. Read the applicable tournament rules for types of play.

Ah, here's the actual reference. Huge Ship Rules, page 4:

Emphasis mine.

Ah, thank you. That isn't what it says in the transport rules insert, hence my confusion.

Thanks Sable - I should have read those rules too.
