Boost and/or barrel roll through asteroid?

By Randito, in X-Wing Rules Questions

I went to watch some tourney play for Imdaar Alpha and saw something that I hadn't seen before.

One of the players boosted through an asteroid without rolling a red dice. Is that a legal move? Or are you supposed to roll?

Sorry if this has already been answered -- me and my X-Wing buddy don't play this way. We play that if the boost or barrel roll maneuver template goes through an obstacle then you can't do the action.

If the maneuver template never touched the asteroid, it was legal.
If not, they should not have been able to Boost.

Cool. Thanks for the heads up. I also verified it in the FAQ:

BOOST ACTION REFERENCE CARD
The last sentence of this card should read:
“A ship cannot boost if this would cause its base to overlap with another
ship’s base or an obstacle token, or if the maneuver template overlaps an
obstacle token.”

I'm confused now. Doesn't the FAQ entry you quoted, make it illegal to boost through an asteroid the way you mentioned?

A ship cannot boost....if the maneuver template overlaps an obstacle token.

Yes, it is indeed illegal to boost through an obstacle (where boosting through an obstacle is defined as the maneuver template of final position overlapping the obstacle).

Unless you're Dash Rendar.

But he hasn't been released yet.

It simply means that you are not allow to boost or b-roll, if the end position lands you on top of an obstacle (ship, debris, asteroid, etc).

If you fly through an obstacle, the standard resolutions regarding the obstacle should apply. In your case, someone missed the rule and should of test for damage.

Not quite, boosting or doing a barrel roll through an asteroid is specifically disallowed per the FAQ.

The reason why I found the original answer confusing is that the correct FAQ entry was mentioned, but a seemingly wrong conclusion was drawn.

There are actually a handful of cards and well-understood rules that are straight up changed in the FAQ, instead of simply clarifying them. Barrel rolling through an asteroid is allowed per the original rule book.

If the maneuver template or base overlaps an obstacle when barrel rolling or boosting, the maneuver is not a legal one and must be undone and:

A) tried differently (so a right boost becomes a straight or left boost)

or

B)Canceled and another action chosen instead

B)

You can pick any other action, including a boost in another direction, but you are not limited to just boosting.

Correct. I mispoke (mistyped?) that response. You get your choice of any action, up to and including trying the boost another way (forwards or opposite side).
