So I did not win Imdaar Alpha...

By Popn618, in X-Wing

I went 2-2 and tied for 4 place, and lost the op for a ship based on having a lower strength of schedule. There with you guys.

Went 1-2 for 5th place with a list of:

Backstabber

Bounty Hunter w/ HLC

OGP w/ Gunner, EU, FCS

Academy TIE

Had fun, will probably not use that particular build again. Will try again tomorrow with a list I've never flown before.

I think that I went to the wrong Imdaar Alpha Event. I went 2-2 and got 15th place of 24. :-) But actually I had a great time. It was my first tournament ever and I played some cool guys. I used an ordnance heavy Tie Bomber build with 4 Bombers including Jonus. My dice were ok overall, but definitely a factor in one of my games, as I rolled 9 straight blank evades. That equals some dead bombers. But it was to the guy who ultimately won second place so I was cool with it. Cody - if your out there- thanks for the good game. My other 3 opponents - Mike, Danny and Steven - were really cool too. All in all a very good experience, except for my little brother getting 14th place. That kinda stung.

I TO'ed today, but we had one player leave after a loss and I decided to jump in.

1-3-0 :\ My three X-Wing list was fun to fly, and I struggled against some pretty good lists, but in the end 3 ship high-risk isn't working. Going to try one of the standard builds around here to see if I can be at least in the running for a large ship. TO'ing reward with the Z-95 card is disappointing IMO, at least compared to Kessel Run's selection of 1 of 6 ships.

Played at Chimera in Beeston, Nottingham. Great event, lots of fun and everyone was flying casual. :-) Prize fund went over the cost so the store gave out credit as secondary, random, participation prizes. Lots of fun.

I went 2-3-0, over 5 rounds, not including the final.

I wouldn't say I was absent of luck, more that the Lady was in a spiteful mood. Opponent rolls no hits? I roll 3 evade. I roll 3 hits, opponent rolls 3 evade. Opponent rolls 3 hits? Fist full of blanks. For the majority of the day. Wins were scrappy at best, even against lists that should have been pretty easy.

A second possibility is that one of my friends has an aura of dice-crapping. At least when he went off for a coffee and the current #2 in the tourney was watching me my dice could do no wrong. Then he left and my friend came back. I call shenannigans with fate.

I was running: BH / HLC, Jonus / Swarm Tactics, Scimitar / Cluster, Dark Curse.

The winner was one of my friends (no, not the one with the Aura of Dice-crapping): Carnor Jax / SD, Alpha, Alpha, Howlrunner / Swarm Tactics, Academy Pilot. A list I've beaten in the past, so I'm not convinced there's anything so much wrong with my build as with my tactics / luck.

Pretty hard to pick out a definitive meta, there was a pretty mixed bag, with lots of players just running stuff they thought would be fun; there were three similar builds to mine, a couple of 4 X, a couple of BBXX, a Chewie and Han dual falcon build, the mini-swarm above and a 6 tie chain-swarm tactics swarm.

As to the last game; My God, the Phantom is dirty. Filthy, filthy dirty. But so's Etahn Abaht.

I went 4-1 for top 8 (actually placed 4th or 5th IIRC) out of 26, but was stomped by SableGryphon in the first elimination round.

I was tired and made a really bad move with Fel and then followed that up with rolling lots of blanks for 2 turns.

I at least feel good that I cannot blame the dice. My first game, I basically flew into the teeth of a swarm. That's all pilot error, baby.

Second game was totally dice. I found most of my deck's Direct Hits.

At one point yesterday (during my friendly post-game) i had two TIEs take identical damage. 1 facedown and 1 Damaged Sensor Array, and these happened in consecutive combat rounds. It was hilarious (both ships actually survived btw). In fact, together they managed to finish off Tycho without their actions at all (ion'd onto an asteroid by an Outmaneuvering Brath as he was).

Yeah, I feel it, too... went 0-3 yesterday and came in exactly dead last of the 8 who showed up. Two of the games were pretty close, the third I got completely hammered. Honestly, I don't feel too bad about it, the dice just completely hated me. Maneuvering and ship choice seemed pretty good... just didn't have any luck at all. Eh, we all have off days.

Got a "thanks for showing up" bandit squadron card, since there weren't too many people there. More importantly, actually have a game store I can play at, now. So, all in all, I feel I made out well.

Ugh, I had two really tense games on Saturday. After three tournaments of IA I was hoping to at least end up in the top four but no dice!

The first of those sunday matches chalked up to three things: early cold dice landing me some hits I didn't need, a positional call that I SHOULD have called the TO over for (it might have saved Garven) and a dispute with Luke shooting at said out of position X-Wing, which I still think was out of arc (but the TO called that one). With two ships left against three it was inevitable, but I wish it could have been closer.

The second match I positioned my Ion-carrying Y-Wing too far away from the rest of my formation when taking on a doomshuttle and two interceptors. Ultimately it came down to a really tense five minute run of 8 turns or so between PTL Fel and Garven with an ion. Three hits with my ion cannons and it didn't mean anything in spite of my positional flying. I got heated near the end over the futility of the match but *shrug* I can't fault my opponent for flying decently.

Even though I didn't win anything I feel I learned a lot from the tournament, which in a way is it's own reward considering I haven't been on the tournament scene in over half a year. Friday spelled the death of running TIE swarms competitively and I got to refine some rebel lists over the weekend. I also discovered how fun Porkins is to fly with Ptl + R5-D8 + Hull upgrade.

I played in my firs tournament on Saturday and won my first match becuase I blew up mores ships than my opponent then lost my next 2 matches.

Krassis (Captive, HLC, EU)

Soontir Fel (PTL)

Avenger Sqdrn Pilot.

Game 1 : I faced Biggs, Luke, and Wes. Opponent was a complete newbie. Didn't line up his templates correctly, was vague on the rules, edged his ships off asteroids, etc. He took out Fel on first pass with 2Hits 2Crits. From there I just utterly ate him. 1W-0L

Game 2 : Saw action against Tycho, Arvel, Ibitsam, and a rookie pilot. I took out Arvel and Rookie early, but the dice were just not with me at all and my opponent clearly involved himself in some sort of ritualistic event that made his dice roll crit after crit....and then more crits. 1W-1L

Game 3 : My opponent was in his late 70's, early 80's and rolled Han (Luke, Chewie, Mill Falcon, Conc Missile, and Elusiveness) and Tycho (PTL and Asslt Missile). This is the game I went into dreading, and nearly pulled out the win, 3 hull left on the falcon. I Hit, Hit, Crit, and thinking my victory was in hand he dropped the Chewie card in front of me and asked if I could explain it to him. I wept tears of steel. I didn't mind losing to him overall, and was pleased the hobby extends to people of his age. He finished 4th overall. 1W-2L .

My experiences were...mixed. This was my first tournament, and I ended up playing against people who were vague on the rules at best (except for my 2nd match). This left me explaining rules and adjudicating much of the matches. I was also pretty lenient with my opponents mistakes as I was hoping to make their experience more enjoyable and increasing the chances they would return. My opponents were nice people though so I didn't walk out of any matches feeling upset or irritated,

The TO I was meh about. He charged $10 a head which I felt was steep, and told people the cost was to help with his added prize support (which there was none of), and he ran a top 4 match with the new ships. 1st place got first pick, 4th got the leftover. If I read correctly it was supposed to be a Top 2 match with 2 new ships each.

I think I'm going to see about hosting events at my local community college...
