Wasting my time, or you think I have a snowballs chance tommrow?

By Desslok, in X-Wing

I am strictly a casual player, throwing down with friends for fun or teaching others how to play at the library's board game night. I play whats fun, not necessarily what will get me a quick, clean victory.

Assuming I put together a reasonably solid fleet, do you guys think I'd be wasting my time if I gave Immdar a spin? Or would I only serve to get some random stranger some extra points? I have no misconceptions of a sweep, getting to the final tier, but I'd like not to get blown out in the first round, either.

Oh, just go. What do you have to lose?

It would be a learning experience. If you get defeated on the first round, then you know next time what would be a better squad and what works and what doesn't work in a tournament setting. Give it a whirl.

10 bucks?

But really though Desslok, it's not like everyone else besides you is going to be these amazing power gamers. Probably going to be a lot of people there who just play mostly casual/small league games. Besides, at the very least you'll get top 16 and a commemorative Bandit Squadron...

I don't know. Snowball lasted a LONG time this year.

You do know Swiss style means you play all rounds right? It's not a knock-out style of tournament.

Oh, okay - you guys convinced me. Its not like I had anything else going on tomorrow anyway. What the hell, huh?

Now I just gotta come up with a solid fleet to unleash. Time to study some other people's threads (and suggestions gladly taken here, too).

You pay $10 and get to hang out with other people who love this game. Some may even like other Board Games and not know about your library's board game nights.

Since the tournament's tomorrow, pick a fleet you've already flown before. Familiarity with a fleet is better than the vast majority of min-maxing that we theory-crafters throw about.

Definitely play. Even if you lose every game, you're still spending a day playing X-Wing. That's time well spent!

And do what DraconPyrothayan suggests - play a list you are familiar with. Don't overload on expensive pilots and upgrades, and try to keep your ships the same pilot skill (if possible) so it's easier to not crash into yourself.

That's one way to go. Me, I know I'm not going to win, because some of the people I play with are a lot better than me. So I'm bringing a completely different list, and tomorrow gives me the chance to try it out over several games. Then I'll just buy the new ships.

You can't win if you don't compete.

My first minis tournament had 30+ people and I placed 4th. Can't win if you don't participate.

I'd like not to get blown out in the first round, either.

I lost my first game 22-100 with carnor jax getting 1shotted round 1 and came back 200-16 in my final 2 matches taking 4th, getting blown out round one is not necessarily a bad thing

This will be my first X-Wing tournament. I've played some other games competitively so I'm not worried.

My 10 year old daughter didn't do well in the 24 person store championship event, but had fun and will be doing AaIA Sunday. She said, "winning would be cool, she just wants to go play because it was fun the first time.

In other words, its worth going regardless of whether you win a ship or not.
