Hey all, have a noob question here: I'm learning the rules to start up my first game I'll be GMing and am a little confused on the skills used for a weapon firing. So if a character is firing a blaster that is Ranged (Light), I understand that they will use dice based on the rank of their Ranged (Light) skill, correct? After that, what is the secondary skill that you use to determine upgrading dice? I can't figure this out. Any help would be appreciated, thanks!
Noob combat check question
For every roll take any skill you have and the attribute it is based on. Larger number is the total size of the dice pool. Smaller number is the number of green dice upgraded to yellows.

I definitely understand this part of it. What I can't figure out is what the second skill is supposed to be when making a combat check with say a Ranged (Light) blaster. I see that I would use Ranged (Light) as one skill, but what is the second?
So, to use your question as an example, you want to make a Ranged (Light) check, which uses Agility as the base attribute. Let's say that the character has Agility of 4 and a Ranged (Light) skill 2. Agility is the larger stat so we use that to create the dice pool of GGGG. Now, we use the lower stat of 2 to upgrade the dice, giving us a final pool of GGYY.
To further the example, just to make the point, let's say we have a character with Agility of 1 and a Ranged (Light) skill of 3. This time, Ranged (Light) is the larger stat, so we use that to crate the dice pool of GGG. Again, we then take the lower stat (this time 1) and use that to upgrade to give us a final pool of GGY.
Make sense?

You're confused. There is no second skill. Only one skill and one attribute, used as I described above.

Every skill in the book tells you the attribute you use in conjunction with it. No skill levels just means you use whatever the base attribute is, so even with no skill in Range(L) if you have a 3 Agility you would roll 3 green dice.
Agility! Yes thank you. That is what I was looking for. Attribute, not skill, sorry!
SO - would agility be the attribute to use for every type of combat check? I'm looking at the weapons and am not seeing where it says agility. Is it always agility? Or different attributes for different types of attacks? And if that's the case, where do I find that info in the core rulebook? Thanks!
Ranged weapons are Agility. Hand to hand is Brawn. If you look at the character sheet in the back of the CRB on p. 444, it lists all the skills and in parentheses after the skill name is an abbreviation listing the corresponding characteristic.

Awesome! Thank you thank you! Y'all rock
. Much appreciated.
This is also listed next to the skills in the first pages of the Skills chapter.
The term "Attribute," while commonly used in RPG parlance, can be confusing to new players since EotE uses the term "Characteristic."
Same idea with Career instead of Class, Species instead of Race, etc ![]()
