Where? Where? Where?

By Orjo Creld, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

Joval has a holdout blaster with short range. She fires at medium-range target. Danged if I can find in the CRB how the difficulty level is affected. I made it difficult 3 purples, but man.

The target is out of range, there is no additional difficulty, which explains why you didn't find it.

You can only extend the range with mods, not extra dice.

The answer is simple, she can't do it without closing range to short or having the Sniper Shot talent using a holdout blaster.

Not sure of the page, but Short = 1 difficulty die, Medium = 2, Long = 3.

First order of bidness then is to acquire some new weaponry.

Partially correct.

As DanteRotterdam noted, each weapon has a maximum range limit. A hold-out blaster and a slugthrower pistol are limited to Short Range, while a blaster pistol or blaster carbine cap out at Medium Range, and a blaster rifle can shoot targets at Long Range.

The only ways to go beyond those listed range limits are the Sniper Shot talent (which requires a maneuver and also upgrades one of the difficulty dice) or select weapon modifications.

Sorry, didn't see the question completely and yes, I should have stipulated that the weapon needs to be able to fire at that range. Or as mentioned, the talent or weapon mod to extend the range of the weapon.

Sorry again for the confusion.

If your GM allows improvised weapons to be thrown to Short range (not too unreasonable) and you have Strong Arm, you could always throw your holdout blaster at the out of (shooting) range target...

Yes, the tried and true "You've run out of bullets, so you throw the gun" thing!

This is why my character will be designed the "throwing holdout blaster," just for this sort of occasion. No ammo? No problem. Just utilize the aerodynamically-sound design and superior rigidity of the Blasterang.

Eh, I use my rule where even though they are 'out of range' you can still shoot at them. In fact since there is no limit on some talents/skills I had a guy convince a group of storm troopers to break from really good cover that the party didn't want to try to close in on. All they did was take shots and yell at them. The shots went well wide of there targets and any successes just bounced off the cover or came really close to the cover. Eventually the troopers failed their discipline check with a despair. So I ruled that due to a communication error one squad charged while the other retreated both breaking from cover and being mowed down in a few rounds as the group moved in. The player in question was really good at those types of situations. I like it when he shines through even though he is not combat heavy.

So do you offer an alternative to Sniper Shot in player progression?
