Magazine idea: 100 Scenarios

By snaykeeiyes, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

So my friend and I were talking about it. Wouldn't it be cool if FFG came out with a monthly magazine or something would be like a "100 Scenarios" type thing. 100 scenarios for Bounty Hunters, and it would have a hit list of 100 types of dudes with stats and payout amounts, an awesome fold out map of the guy's hideout or something with a perforated edge to come out of the magazine, and some tokens for these scenarios. maybe even a small adventure seed to have it intertwined with your ongoing campaign. The main goal of this being to get content in between the big books and stuff, and also to give us fun visuals to have for our campaigns! Thought/ideas?

With little work you can adapt Traveller's 21 Plots books. Each adventure features the core of the plot followed by 6 different possible additions to the plot. It's really quite a handy line of products.

You can get them cheap on DriveThruRpg. There are several 21 Plots books with some that specialize in underworld dealings (good for your smuggler characters) and other environments.

To your original post, I agree it would be cool if FFG could publish a monthly magazine with plot threads and commentary on game mechanics. Unfortunately they couldn't make it an online publication (which would keep costs down) so they'd have to go the print route. I don't know if they have the manpower or budget to engage in such a project.

**** you money for getting in the way of cool things! lol

Nothing stopping a fan-made one though..

I'd rather have FFG spend their resources on career/location books than plot hooks.

Find a copy of WOtC's Galactic Campaign Guide roll d100 and there you go

There's a reason things like this don't exist anymore; print is dead and it's next to impossible to make money on a magazine, especially one as niche as what you're proposing. Even Wizards has moved the Dungeons & Dragons magazines to be online only, and the fan base for that is exponentially larger than what EotE will likely ever be.

The fact is, creating content is a time consuming and expensive process. The cost of publishing print content is also very expensive, and there's a massive up front cost i.e. printing 1 copy wouldn't be that much cheaper than 100 or 1000. Without the right demand, the price they would have to charge just to break even would be exorbitant. I'm not disagreeing that it would be nice, but it's simply not going to happen.

With that said, I would suggest you track down the Star Wars Adventure Journals from the old WEG D6 game. It's essentially what you're talking about. It was a quarterly magazine of about 300 pages that contained original stories, adventure seeds, game stats, and usually a full adventure.

Also, the WEG Bounty Hunters Galaxy Guide has a bunch of bounty targets with descriptions and payouts.

Saga Edition also did this and you can still find the links here.

I wonder if they could do something like WEG's Adventure Journal? A quarterly 140-ish page paperback sized supplement that consisted mostly of submitted material (from professionals, not fans). It would relieve the burden of writing new stuff in-house, requiring just an editor and someone to do the layout.

Thanks for your input! I'll check out all your suggestions.

Engine Publishing (http://www.rpgnow.com/browse.php?manufacturers_id=3323) has three books that offer a GM all sorts of goodies including NPC's for any genre, plot hooks and campaign management ideas.

So clicking that link takes me to a page with a bunch of products. Could you be specific by naming the products you are recommending?

Thanks,

J
