Swoop Bikes and Damage

By pressie, in Game Masters

How are other GM's treating swoop bikes, they are vehicles so probably should require 10 personnel damage to do 1 vehicle damage, but they seem more flimsy in Jedi.

I reckon I'll keep them vehicle scale, but you make a good point about the movies. If we had to apply some game mechanics to it, I'd say someone rolled really well!

Remember things like crits and they were being shot by iconic characters on the last mission of the war, who probably had considerable skill level, heavily modded favorite weapons, multiple levels of Vicious and Lethal Blows, etc.

It's not inconceivable that a moderately experienced character with a big enough gun could one-shot a swoop bike.

Thanks I can live with this. :)

Did I say it was?

We use a x5 multiple instead of x10. This personal weapons a bit more dangerous to vehicles (especially missile launchers which are shown blowing up starfighters in TCW)

The missile launcher shouldn't even do Personal-scale damage. They're realistically dangerous enough to only do Planetary-scale even against personal-sized targets. You don't just walk away from being in epicenter of a rocket or missile or RPG explosion.

Ha, I quoted the wrong post. Don't worry, I agree with you.

It's not inconceivable that a moderately experienced character with a big enough gun could one-shot a swoop bike.

In the Bounty Hunters episode of TCW fifteen minutes in, Embo one-shots a speeder bike with his Bowcaster causing it to explode.

Yeah but mechanics-wise in this game, how likely is that to be repeated?

Why would it have to be likely to be repeated?

But fine. Since a bowcaster does a base 10 damage, the PC will by definition be doing at least 11 points of damage on any successful hit which is enough to deal 1 hull trauma to the vehicle. If the vehicle is already in disrepair (as the pirate bikes in TCW might have been, who can say) then that would be enough to destroy a speeder bike right then and there. Otherwise, for a vehicle in better condition (with 2 HTT), then I'd allow a Triumph to certainly cause a power cell overload or some-such effect especially if narratively it makes things interesting if the enemy isn't allowed to escape like in that episode of TCW.

So the answer to your question is, "As often as it needs to be repeatable."

If you Google, you will find several instances of soldiers surviving being struck by an RPG. So, it can happen, even if it's one in a million and the GM has to explain how the PC was tossed aside by the explosion, receiving massive damage but still surviving, etc. I don't take a "direct hit" to mean the missile actually lodged inside of the person's body then exploded (although with duds even that has been survivable), but it hit right beside you, took off a leg, etc, all of which can be survivable.

My grandfather had a Stuka bomb blow up directly above his head. What actually saved him was being exaclty in the epicenter of the blast; all of the force went outwards from where he was standing. He only received some shrapnel to his face. Two or three others nearby him all died.

I have a personal friend I talk to almost daily that survived being RAN OVER BY AN M1 TANK. He walks, talks, runs, has all of his limbs, etc. He not only survived being squished by a tank's tracks, but is still so physically capable (extremely fast reflexes in timed drills) that he is my shield-man on the special response team I lead.

Strange things do happen, so as a GM I wouldn't rule anything out. If we only allowed common results, what would Triumphs and Despairs be for. :)

PS: I too use x5 instead of x10. I think it solves several issues for me.

Why would it have to be likely to be repeated?

Because you seemed to claim that a cinematic scene (which didn't care about the game mechanics) could be replicated by the game mechanics, and I was curious as to how you'd go about doing that.

TCW S1 Ep 12 also has Clonetroopers destroying speeder bikes with blaster pistols. They were big speeder bikes too.

Maybe all these TCW exploding speeders are being driven by minions? And the one shooting at them generated a crit? Thus, the blowing up part is simply a narrative of taking out said minion?

That is because Embo is a slice of frikkin cool smothered in awesome sauce................
