Building a Hutt's palace

By cvtheoman, in Game Masters

As some of you know from my previous posts, my players are about to take down their former master, Bargos the Hutt, with the aid of some local pirates. They made some mediocre rolls on some scouting several sessions back, so I made the a quick map showing the following rooms:

-Courtyard

-Entrance Hall

-Business Office

-Audience Chamber

-Conference Room

-Vehicle Bay

-Storage Rooms (2)

-Armory

-Droid Workshop

-Med Bay

-Cafeteria

-Guest Quarters

-Comm/Ops Center

I also left the back part of the map with just some hallways running off into blank space. Of course, my players, deeming that the Hutt will be a coward and try to escape impending doom, decided to b-line to the blank portions in the back. I know there's going to be a secret docking bay where the Hutt is going to try to escape, as well as the pit where he keeps his pet krayt dragon (that the PCs delivered to him before their betrayal). Beyond that, I'm starting to run out of ideas on what might be in the palace.

So what should be in a Hutt palace? What are the rooms you never got to see on film that you just know Jabba had hidden away?

Power plant. Palace defense shield projector. Concealed defense turrets. Wine cellar......

His locked down vault room where he keeps his loot. The chamber is locked down with a difficult lock requiring a retinal scan. Inside the vault are two K4 Security Droids. If the droids are aren't given the proper pass phrase not only do they attack but also the room's vents begin to push in deadly dioxine.

Heroes who want to brave the vault may get some information ahead of time from the Hutt's majordomo or some other lackey they can intimidate. They can then properly plan how to deal with the vault's defenses. Perhaps they'll deal with it "Ocean's 11" style or perhaps they'll just try to blast their way in.

And of course once they bypass the vault's defenses they may find the Hutt's stash. Or they may find the flag of the local pirate gang indicating that they robbed the vault before the heroes got there necessitating trying to raid a pirate base in the future.

I think I'm going to add this to one of the adventure seed threads people have floating around on this forum...

Guard quarters / security post

mud baths

greenhouse (hydroponic?)

kitchens and massive larder (possibly with livestock pens?)

quarters for household staff

Everything you've got, but with more formal/workers options. So a formal entrance for visitors he wants to impress, and a workers entrance for his scum and servants. Guest quarters for real guests, guest workers quarters for not real guests, slave and servant quarters, and soundproofed cells for his extra special guests (3-4 should be adequate). Formal dining room for impressing, cafeteria for feeding the roadies.

Don't go bonkers with the armory if he's like Jabba assume most of his scum are required to provide their own gear.

I'd add a "special room" that houses some specific hobby he's into. Maybe as simple as a garage full of high end repulsor sleds, or as complicated as a *cough* dungeon.

So what should be in a Hutt palace? What are the rooms you never got to see on film that you just know Jabba had hidden away?

I'm assuming you took a look at the list of rooms, etc... that were present in Teemo's palace in Long Arm of the Hutt?

Have you done any research on the kinds of things found in or on the grounds of modern Royal palaces? Buckingham Palace? The Tower of London? Those $200+ million dollar mansions that the multi-billionaires buy?

Garages, racetracks, tennis courts, bowling alleys, indoor firing ranges, golf courses, swimming pools, aquariums (think Monterey Bay Aquarium), arcades, pool & gaming tables, movie theaters, gladiator arenas, various guest and slave quarters, farms, gardens, barracks, armory, jail, dungeon, interrogation & torture facilities, ....

And that's just what I can come up with off the top of my head.

I'm sure there's lots of overlap with what others have said, or ideas you've already had, but maybe there's something useful in this list.

You forgot prison cells. And possibly a torture chamber nearby.

See, when I saw the ****** bar, my mind went a whole other direction. I was sure you had tried to enter t1tty bar. Which, by the way, is something else tyrannical megalomaniacs tend to install in or near their seats of power/palace.

Ooh! You could run a sidequest where you rescue the Hutt's slaves/dancers from servitude!

EDIT: Suggested sidequest.

I always love giving the characters something entirely strange or unique...something that lifts them off the page, and brings them out of their stereotype.

Perhaps this Hutt has a private karaoke lounge? Or series of Karaoke booths? What kind of bizarre habit could you give him that players won't expect?

Maybe he's a history buff and has a huge library dedicated to Jedi Knights. Maybe he has scores of books on the subject, and players can get a little history lesson in!

Or maybe, he's secretly an adventurer, and has datapads and maps filled with possible hyperspace routes that were lost with time.

Don't just see this as an opportunity to fill the palace with things the players expect. See this as an opportunity to delight them, to intrigue them, and to shape the kind of characters and plots they'll remember long after the game ends.

Does the forum even censor the word "titty"?

EDIT: Guess not! :D

Ah, well, I wasn't sure, so figured I'd stray on the safe side.
