Advice on lending ships for tournaments

By kevano69, in X-Wing

This isn't MTG where half the game is throwing money at it. The metagame is list design. He doesn't physically have that TIE but he still designed that list. You're giving him no advantage apart from saving him from being a tenner out of pocket.

MTG still can be about list design, that's the best part of it. Any idiot can buy a netdeck and learn to pilot it, the trick is throwing the curveballs.

But the CCG format hampers that in that it becomes a financial arms race, one WotC is very aware of and thus deliberately prints TIE advanceds as fluff.

I've never played super competitively but online cards could be had pretty cheaply if you scouted around. :P.

The couple of thousand of cards in a suitcase in the attic are for waiting for me to make time to resort them. Especially now that I've found out about commander...

Facebook post for the tournament I'm heading to tomorrow talks about possibly lowering the point squad total for Assault on Imdaar Alpha due to players not having enough ships.

Now, the opposite side of the coin. Do I lend ships out to strangers so that I don't have to rebuild a list on the spot?

I have enough for multiple squads but I won't know most of the people going to this tournament. I'll make a definite BatRep when its done but it would be a little unnerving to have to listbuild on the spot. I won't even know how many points it would be modified to as it will be taking stock of what all the players are able to bring with them the-day-of.

Comments?

Little time to read everything else but as long as you trust that everything you loan the friend will be returned safe and unharmed, and that you aren't loaning anything you will be using, I think it is selfish NOT to loan your friend the pieces he may need to finish up his squadron.

Perhaps X-Wing is an "arms race" but it's pretty easy as things go. If the only reason you're not loaning a friend the pieces he needs, but apparently has/will not purchase, to complete his squad is because he could beat you with it that doesn't say much about YOUR ability to play. If you want to encourage play you need to help break down the barriers to playing and recognizing that everyone may not have every piece needed to field some squadron is part of that.

To me a something like the 8 ship TIE Swarm is a GREAT example of where hope plenty of "loaning" goes on. Unless EVERYONE is playing swarms someone is going to have TIE Fighters sitting on the sidelines. I may believe that owning 4 or 5 T/F is a good idea for anyone wanting to fly Imperials but I hope we don't force people to buy the 3 more ships if they want to try out a full Swarm. I'd say the same about running multiples of the Large ships; a person doesn't gain much with three Falcons or Firespray except making one more 100 point option available and if one wants to try those I hope we don't make them spend another $20 for a squad they may only fly once.

Nope my flying ability is good to fair (1st tourney 2for2). Have already contacted friend and he's making his list as we speak.Looking forward to beating/loosing/winning/learning.

rent him your ships for a 15 dollar fee plus an additional 15 buck deposit PER each additional SMALL ship he uses...

Got two tourneys this weekend in good old sunny Scotland, getting a good following from my local games club as interest from others seeing me play my friend has escalated quite well. And gonna risk it for a biscuit with a 3 x-wing build.

our imdar tournament is this weekend, im running 3-x as well

Hey guys,

I seem to be in a pickle over going to a store tournament, and would like some advice on the etiquette of lending a friend my ships (as he has only two TIE's). I am not a poor sport, nor do I throw my dummy (pacifier) out the pram when I loose (I learn from the experience). But to help a friend beat yourself and others is this ethical ? To me X-Wing kinda feels like one massive arms race, with everyone rushing to the stores for the latest new ship (or cards). So I thought I would head here to find a general consensus on the subject (I do apologise if there is already a thread for this). Have any of you's wondered over the same implications or am I just over thinking here and should see him as just another opponent ?

Didn't read the thread, but really?

If they are ships you're not using for the tourney, why would you not lend...?

Lend him the ships - but if he wins, then you get a share of the spoils...

That's how it always worked with lending Magic cards in my (very competitive) circle.
