Blinded Lt Blount

By godofcheese, in X-Wing Rules Questions

Here's one that may not have been thought of?

For Blinded Pilot, you have to attack and roll no dice.

For Lt Blount, he definitely won't cause the opposition to suffer damage.

But since you have to declare the attack, and then roll no dice I would think that this would cause him to register a hit.

Thoughts?

Technical loophole, but seems legit.

Yeah, his attack would seem to hit with no dice.

That was my thought. I fully expect it to be eventually FAQ'd to say no, for balance reasons, but till then. It would be the perfect time to shoot at that cloaked Phantom at R3 through an asteroid with Ion Pulse missiles.

Why would it be a balance problem?

OK, sure, it may seem a bit odd to be able to hit when you roll no dice. But for this to occur you have to take exactly one crit, with no additional damage (because 2 hull) and hit the 1/16 shot at a Blinded Pilot, AND have that happen early enough in the game so that you still have an appropriate missile, or your opponent still has a Stealth Device.

I'm guessing that even if you use Blount every single game, you're going to see that 1 game in 100, and that's probably being fairly optimistic about the chances. That's not a balance problem.

I'd also question whether it's a loophole, technical or otherwise. C-3PO shows us that FFG is capable of writing abilities which only work if you roll dice, so if they'd intended Blount's ability to be dependent on having rolled dice, it probably would be.

I don't think it's a loophole. And there is no reason to change anything. He hits even without rolling dice. So what?

Yeah it isnt stupidly OP as I've hardly seen that card come up in all the games I've played (maybe 3 times out of about 20 games?)

As an extra clarification, does it mean you still choose HOW to attack? So in Blount's case, even with blinded pilot, could he choose to use his Ion Pulse Missiles and still cause 1 damage and 2 ion?

Yes, you still choose the weapon. That works. Blinded pilot does only one thing: You roll zero red dice. Everything else resolves as normal.

Yes, he can still use Pulse/Assault missiles while blinded.

Of course, if you still have your Pulse/Assault missiles when you're taking a crit, you may not have been playing him correctly. Only has 4 HP, and we're talking a scenario where he's lost 3 of that...

or a proton bomb...

Just throwing in my agreement with Buhallin, Dvor and others.

The fact is that Lt Blount always hits, even if he rolls all blanks. Rolling no dice is really on different rules wise.
