I encountered the Herd of Space Cattle

By Engine25, in X-Wing Battle Reports

And I limped away victorious! After a long, arduous trampling. Have seen some friends lose to it and have seen some people on here saying they've lost to it, but either I'm extraordinarily lucky or its beatable with patience.

I ran this list:

Chewbacca

+Elusiveness

+Millennium Falcon

+Hull Upgrade

Dagger Squadron Pilot

+Fire Control System

x2

He ran this, which he plans to run for Imdaar Alpha:

Omicron Group Pilot

+Ion Cannon

+Anti-Pursuit Lasers

Omicron Group Pilot

+Ion Cannon

Omicron Group Pilot

+Saboteur

+Anti-Pursuit Lasers

Omicron Group Pilot

+Saboteur

+Anti-Pursuit Lasers

Burning through 40 hit points takes about as long as it sounds. I really think a big contributor to my victory was that he, too, had to chew up a relatively large number of hits compared to many popular lists, greatly without the assistance of face-up damage effects.

I placed asteroids pretty dense in the center and slow played a few turns to let him move in some. He started all ships pointing to one side and turned in slowly. He bumped himself a lot, but I was able to force him into asteroids several times. I only fell victim to his ion cannons twice. One was gone by the third turn of combat, but then Dagger 1 bumped a shuttle and was destroyed by Anti-Pursuit Lasers. Chewbacca did get Sabotaged once, leading to a Direct Hit turning up. He responded by vaporizing another space cow at range, but then the next turn he hit another cow, which forced him onto an asteroid. Both damaged triggered, destroying Chewbacca in an embarrassing spectacle. But, now it was up to Dagger 2 to outmaneuver the shuttles, which luckily wasn't terribly difficult as he had an advantageous position and only two shields down. He took one more attack from the beasts, which eliminated all but one shield, and then, during the next activation phase, the timer blew. According to tournament rules, we are allowed to finish the current turn. The Dagger destroyed one of the final two shuttles.

Ironically, this left us in a draw, according to the rules. Both remaining ships cost 26 points. However, we finished the game out, and several turns later (I had a long distance to travel in a slow B-wing as he tried to come about for a final stand), I struck the beast down with a close-range volley. He was able to get a few long range shots in, taking me down to 2 hull, but once I got in close I rolled out of arc and blew him away.

It was an interesting experience to say the least, and it definitely took some patience. We went over time by about 20 minutes, which consisted of a lot of long range volleys and closing distance as he circled around the asteroid cluster.

Has anyone else played or played against 4 shuttles? What strategies do you use with it/against it?

I recently won a UK regional with Space Cows. My build was a little more symmetrical, 4 x OGP with APL, and FCS. The 40 hp is a daunting task for any list, and once you learn to fly without exposing your poor maneuverability they can cope with most builds. My APLs have been clear winners in some games, and unnecessary in other, but I wouldn't go without them, they make close range fights with them risky for my opponent.

I will be running them at Nationals this weekend for certain.

A buddy of mine won a UK regional with a shuttle swarm, different set up than the one above and much more aggressive, it's a beatable list you just have to know what you're doing, I wouldn't like to think I had to play against multiple lists in one event, it's quite the stressful experience as I'm sure you can appreciate from your own game.

I won't elaborate on his list here, I'm sure he'll do that soon enough as he's taking it to nationals this weekend I believe.

Tees Squadron Doyle Leader, standing by.

Ha there he is ^^

So, yes, I may have experimented with the occasional shuttle. ;)

You flew just about the perfect counter to such a list. Heavy hitters with lots of hitpoints. B-Wings really do fulfill their intended role of anti-large ship assault fighters.

As you know, I prefer a different loadout to 4 Lambdas (4x OGP + Engine Upgrade) which makes them into massive interceptors (imagine if I could put Turr Phennir in a Lambda...). APL is a nice upgrade, but it's found a home on the Outer Rim Smuggler for me.

I am happy that Saboteur is getting some use. It's a card I want to like more than I do.

Anyway, thank you very much for the write-up. Glad you survived the herd. It's one of those lists that, win or lose, you respect afterwards.

Quite Welcome. I DID survive the herd, but based on Tournament Rules, we got a draw. Afterwards, I could swear all those rounds chasing that poor cow took at least another half hour. Both ships were damaged but had some hits left to take, particularly the shuttle which still had 6-7 I believe. Question, when he told me what he was running, I almost switched to a 4 interceptor list, basic strategy would be to get behind him early. Glad I didn't do that. Anyway I appreciate your comments. It was definitely a learning experience!
