New Player Question- What can gold on a character be used for?

By thewrathchilde, in 1. AGoT General Discussion

I looked around on CardGame DB and on here (my search-fu is weak) and couldn't find an explanation...

What is the point of gold on a character (Merchant's Widow)?

From what I read in the threat I could find on CardGameDB you can't spend it like gold in your pool and it also doesn't count for dominance, what can it be used for?

Thanks,

Steve

Merchant's Widow gets +1 STR for each gold token on it.

Depends on the ability/text of the character. Gold tokens are sometimes used as generic counters.

There is not any function for gold on a character unless a card ability creates one. For an example, see The Red Viper from A Poisoned Spear.

thanks for the responses; I appreciate the answers.

@scantrell24- that is exactly what I was looking for. The explicit ability for each card (Merchant's Widow, Red Viper) is a given what I was looking for you addressed perfectly whether or not there was some other global affect/use of the old.

Quick note; gold on cards (not in your gold pool) do not get taken via the taxation phase.

I made that mistake for a while with Tywin (core).
