Quick Draw: Only weapons or weapons & items

By Mordjinn, in Star Wars: Edge of the Empire RPG

This is no biggie, but since it became a discussion piece amongst our group it would be interesting to hear how others are handling Quick Draw.

In talent trees (for example Assassin Corebook p.59) Quick Draw extends to drawing also easily accessible items (like Stimpacks). The full description of the talent (Core p.141) only mentions weapons. Which one do you use?

I allow it to be used for any item that would require a maneuver to take out.

If you read the description for most utility belts, etc... you will note that they allow you to take out items with an incidental, basically just like quick draw.

So, it would seem to me that if you had the Quick Draw skill, that would actually apply to any weapon, item, but not anything that has the "Prepare" attribute -- Quick Draw won't help you with an E-Web Heavy Repeating Blaster.

I'm on the fence with regards to "Cumbersome" items. They can have a Weapon Sling or Weapon Mount attached, which gives them the equivalent of Quick Draw. But I'm not sure if the normal Quick Draw skill should be applied to them if they didn't have an appropriate sling or mount.

There aren't any contradictions there, just one is a little more inclusive than the other. So I'd tend to be more inclusive, allowing the descriptions to co-exist in harmony.

I would go with any weapon or item that requires a maneuver to draw or stow, but I think this is the GM's call.

We've been playing it as weapons and items. If the GM thinks an item would be buried in a backpack or otherwise hard to reach he might still call for a maneuver. If it's stuff the character uses often, then easy to grab.

I'm allowing it to be used for weapons and small items, but I'm a bit of a stickler for only having it work with items that are, in fact, easily accessible (worn on a belt, bandolier or in a holster for example). Just last night I didn't let one of my players quick-draw a grenade he carried in a shoulder satchel. It's a pretty great talent as is, but it does specify that it can only be used with items that are placed in easy-to-reach places on your body.

To clear up confusion, a GM might confirm with the player what equipment the PC is carrying in an easy-to-reach location. That would seem to be the best way forward, and alleviate much rules deliberation and mid-combat discussion.

So. Imagine you have an extra reload(or, 8). That can be quickdrawn. HOWEVER. A bandolier for extra reloads costs 50 credits, in a table if I remember(Not in the core).

If you don't have a bandolier, where are you keeping those 8 reloads?

Pockets, pouches, stuffed into boots, stuffed into backpacks, anywhere really.

A utility belt and a load bearing harness or the vest in EtU would provide a multitude of options for being able to draw a number of items quickly.

Check out the A/KT Tracker Utility Vest from EtU, page 45.

Don't forget the Crocodile Dundee Method of strapping it under your shirt and armored jacket behind your back.

If it starts to get ridiculous, and the player has maxed out his encumbrance with small items and wants EVERYTHING to be Quick-Drawn, and especially if he is using a backpack, you should probably have a convo with the player and have him tell you where each item is located. Items stored outside of the backpack are probably quick-drawable, but stuff stowed inside the pack should still require a maneuver to get out.

Wanting to Quick Draw a lot of small stuff could be a good use for the backpack with additional pouches in EtU. Once you buy all of the additional pouches it has the same carrying capacity as the military backpack in DC but at twice the cost. For twice the cost the player should get something, and allowing a bunch of small stuff be stored in the small extra pouches for ease of Quick Draw retrivial sounds right.
