Newbie looking for Suggestions

By Sonikgav, in X-Wing

Ive had interest in playing X-Wing for a while now, infact i bought my first models over a year ago i just havent had much chance to get any game time in but thats changing soon so im diving in headfirst.

When i first started i picked up a Falcon and 2 X-Wings to play against my friends basic fleets.

Ive spent some time on some Squadron Builders and heres what ive come up with with a brief explanation/reasoning.

Gold Squadron + R2, Ion Cannon

Gold Squadron + R2, Ion Cannon

Blue Squadron + Advanced Sensors

Blue Squadron + Advanced Sensors

I LOVE the heavy fighters. Durability and Power is always my thing over speed though i prefer fighter based over the big ships like the Falcon etc so B and Y wings really appeal to me. Plus i love the idea of hitting Ion Shots all day while the B Wings do the damage.

Im open to suggestions though i am kinda in love with the B-Wing atm and so also open to suggestions of pure B-Wing Lists.

Ive heard mixed thoughts on what Ten Numb is best equipped for but ive been playing with this (though Costly)

Ten Numb + Advanced Sensors, Autoblaster, Push the Limit, Engine Upgrade

Blue Squadron + Fire Control System, Ion Cannon

Blue Squadron + Fire Control System, Ion Cannon

If my understanding is correct Ten Numb can basically Barrel Roll AND Boost before he's even made his movement to close in superfast and his ability makes the Autoblaster a little OP. Though ive heard similar thoughts in regards to his use of the HLC though (and maybe cos im new) i dont understand how that works. Doesnt his ability and the ability of the HLC conflict?

If it helps, available to me right now is:

1x Falcon

3x X-Wing (1core, 2 expansion)

2x Y-Wing

2x B-Wing

I am looking into an Imperial Fleet too but i think im going to wait for Wave 4 and try something with the Phantoms or maybe a silly 8 Headhunter Squadron.

Looks like a solid list.

You could modify it up and go with 1 Y wing and 3 Blues. Hits a little harder. Or you could swap out the A.S. for ion cannons and go for a control squad that can deal with dual YT's.

Either way, its good lists all around.

That's a great list. You have 2 more points to spend. When you get the hang of good formation flying then I would also consider adding Biggs. Paul Heaver (reigning world champ) ran a similar build at a Regional and came in Top 4:

Biggs

Gold + Ion + R3-A2 (stress droid)

2x Blue + Advanced Sensors

The drawback with R3-A2 is that it only works in the front arc, and your Gold has a turret, but if you land both you REALLY lock down your opponent.

Edit: the stress droid come with the Transport, and Sensors come with the Shuttle (and E-wing soon)

My Original Plan was Ion on everything, but then i realised its all well and good stunning everything but im gonna need to do actual damage at some point and id rather dedicate my B Wings to that role. I may test the Ion control Squadron at some point but i really like the evasive options that the AS give the B-Wing.

And yeah, im aware i have 2 points spare but i just couldnt find anything to go anywhere. Even those R2's on the Y-Wings were just thrown in as spare as i couldnt even find a use for 4 points.

The ion cannons advantage is that it works well against other B-wings.

You square off nose to nose. They shoot full guns and take out one ship, you ion those remaining. The next turn they shoot past and you 2K onto their tail. They never get another shot on you except for the 4th (but if it is PS 2 it will be ioned then free to act).

If you don't want to ion then you still have 3 ships with 3 dice, and that ion turret is more useful at 1 and ion @ 360 then 2 straight ahead.

Im going to try the 2Y/2B list but i will experiment with the Ion Cannons on the B's. Infact, in the immediate future i guess thats how i will be running them, mostly because i wont be able to get the Advanced Sensors until Wave 4 (im not buying 2 shuttles).

When Republic Aces comes out ill get my Third B-Wing, 2 A-Wings (with a single expansion) and then wait for 2 or 3 E-Wings and maybe some Headhunters though im not sold on them for anything other than spam.

Why are all my posts appearing with white bars over them?

You've got a Bothan problem

That may be the one way I'd consider playing the Autoblaster but unless you're facing a LOT of high Agility ships I'm not so sure it is worth it. Remember, Ten say one [crit] can't be cancelled by dice but it can still be cancelled by Token and furthermore Autoblaster would allow the [crit] to get cancelled before the token needs to be spent on [hit] results. It may be odd but with twin Ion Cannons in the squadron I'm not so sure the hyper-mobile B-Wing is needed to line up shots/dodge arcs.
