I can only buy one more ship...

By KurtKanos, in X-Wing

Hi everyone, new player here. I'm looking at playing the tournament this weekend, but have only had a chance to play 2 tournament games and will probably get another one or two before Sunday. I'm also between paydays, so I can only get one more ship to make my 100 point list. Which would you recommend?

For Rebels, I have the core set X-Wing and a Y-Wing.

For Imperials, I have the two core set Tie Fighters and a Tie Advanced.

I split my money up between Rebels and Imps so that I could play the game with my friends who don't play the game, but now I don't have enough ships for either side. Since I can buy one more, I'm either going to have 3 rebel ships or 4 imperials. Any advice as to what the best value would be? I could stretch my budget and get one of the big ships - Boba Fett or the Millenium Falcon - or one of the smaller fighters.

And no, I don't expect to win anything my first time really playing the game, but I still want to make sure I get the best squad I can under the circumstances :) .

Rebels generally do better with fewer ships. I would say an X-Wing expansion would be adequate, but a Falcon would probably give you a more competitive three ship list.

Well, if you're going to stretch your money, go for Imperial Aces, and get the two interceptors.

  1. Get a Millennium Falcon.

  2. Play Han Solo with the Luke Skywalker crew.

  3. Flank with a Rookie Pilot, and a Y-Wing with an Ion Cannon Turret.

  4. Salt and pepper other upgrades to taste.

  5. ?????

  6. Profit

Isn't the Millennium Falcon twice the cost of a small ship in the states too? So you could get 2 small ships instead?

Or yeah if you hate fun get a Falcon and field a list with 2 turrets.

It sure is.

X Wing expansion

Depending on where you get your ships the Falcon may cost twice what two small ships do but that is not always the case. Admittedly Aces and the Firespray should cost what the Falcon does and either could be used to fill out a 100 point Imperial squadron.

Oh, and since when is "play to win" the same a "hate fun"? As a newbie the HSF with X/Y Wings can be very forgiving. Turrets are part of the game and while they can end up being a crutch they can make learning a lot more fun when you WIN games instead of constantly losing because you haven't figured maneuvering out yet. You'll need to grow more later but there's no need to throw someone into a riptide when they are just learning to swim.

Yeah getting the falcon would give you a moderately competitive list. Easy for beginners.

Your best bet I think is just to save your money and get another core set. Watch and play casual on the side of the tourney. Especially if it costs money.

For Imperials:

Imperial Aces for 2 awesome Interceptors (also comes with lots of nifty stuff that you can also equip your Republic forces with as well)

Republic:

X-wing (for Wedge) and/or B-wing (one of the best ships in the game currently)

Your lack of a collection is quite similar to mine (I only have 2 core sets that were half price at Target). I'd recommend looking at what makes you happy. My son (as noted in a post of mine last week) is "jonesing" for me to get the Falcon and Slave I. If you have a preference, I'd go with what you'd like as you'll enjoy if far longer after the tournament.

My vote (based on preference) would be Slave I or the Falcon depending on which faction you prefer.

If you aren't stuck with 1 piece only, it might behoove you to pick up Imperial Aces for your collection. I really want an Interceptor, but am leaning against that in favor of the Aces based on posts I've been reading.

In all of the "What should I buy next" posts, the responses are similar to what you see here. The resounding choice should be "get what you like"!

If you already own the following:

1 X-wing (core set)

1 Y-wing

2-TIE Fighters (core set)

1-TIE Advanced

My recommendation would be the X-wing expansion pack. My reasons are:

1.) One more Imperial ship isn't going to give you the point value you really need to make a competitive list. TIEs tend to be fragile, and one TIE Interceptor with 2 TIE Fighters and 1 TIE Advanced is probably going to be too fragile. Even though you "could" get to 100 points with elite pilots. A TIE Bomber loaded with ordinance will probably get shot down before it can unload it's missles/torps. One TIE Fighter expansion won't utilize enough points to be worth while.

2.) If we assume we've ruled out an Imp ship, that means you are looking at a 3 man Rebel force. A 3 man force means you'll want all elite pilots. I strongly recommend the X-wing expansion pack because Wedge is a superb pilot. His ability to take away one defense die from opponents really helps you cut through TIES.

3.) The various torpedo and R2 droid upgrades in the X-wing expansion are interchangeable with the X-wing and Y-wing ships you already own, so there is a synergy there.

One downside is that it would be nice to have some of the upgrade cards, like Push the limit (which comes in the A-wing set or the Imperial Aces set). But I suppose a Luke, Wedge, Dutch with Astromech droids and maybe some torpedos in case you come up against a dual falcon list would be ok.

My second recommendation would be to pickup the A-wing because it has some good upgrade cards, like Push the Limit, and Tycho Celchu's ability to keep taking actions even while stressed could be helpful against all the new stuff that puts an emphasis on stressing opponents.

Your not really close to being able to field a playable Imperial list, but if you are still playing games <100 points I would buy the TIE Fighter expansion to get Howelrunner.

But if you just buy the Slave I expansion you should be able to play a pretty good Imperial list. But it will be sad w/out Howelrunner.

I would say rebel aces or imperial aces both will give you outstanding options and great ships.

If you can stretch for a big ship just get another core, IMO. That is your best chance to make 100v100.

Actually the core is a tad more. Ok so one big ship = two small in price... I would get a B-wing and an Interceptor. Soontir Fel can stretch an Imp list by 30 points, so can any B-wing.

Falcon. X-Wing generic, Y-Wing generic with Ion Turret, named and Falcon pilot can hold its own in a competitive environment, has plenty of room for whichever upgrades you feel are best for your style, and is new player friendly.

What AgentV said pretty much. A YT-1300 piloted by Han wil give you a solid 100 point list that will be reasonable for use in a tournament environment. In fact I faced that list at the last Store Championships.

I could stretch my budget and get one of the big ships - Boba Fett or the Millenium Falcon

If you can swing it, I'd recommend the Falcon.

Add 1 to the Falcon

Or if money is tight, X-Wing expansion.

And enjoy the tournament :)
