So I read today's news item and it says that the top 4 players get their choice of ship to incorporate into a squad. That would mean that you only get 1 ship for free that you must compete in the elimination round with.

However, I keep seeing people build/post lists for rebels and imperials that use both ships for the respective sides.

Are those people mistaken? Am I misinterpreting the structure?

I think you are talking about the prizes, the top 4 get to chose their prize. Before that though the top 2 get to chose empire or rebel and then take the 2 ships from wave 4 that correspond to that side and make a new squad using those ships. This will decide who is in first place.

For the battle:

One player will construct an Imperial squad that fields both the TIE defender and TIE phantom. The other will construct a Rebel squad that utilizes the Z-95 Headhunter as well as the E-wing. Both players will complete their 100-point squadrons by adding starships and upgrades from their existing X-Wing collections. Then, they’ll face off in a heated duel for the fate of the galaxy!

Then after that, 1st place gets to grab any of the packs they want, 2nd place gets to choose one from whats left, and so on until 4th gets the last pack.

I think the real question is "are the top 2 players playing with the actual prizes in the final round? So in the end, the prize for 1st through 4th is a expansion ship that has already been removed from its packaging?

So cheap! Why not give out one of each to the winners?

The kits only come with one set of ships, so the prizes will be the same ones used in the final round. Too bad for the eBay crowd that they won't be mint...

Probably on purpose, and to be honest I think it's a good idea, just meant to be a fun event.

I think that may be it right there. Cut back on the crazyness of the ebay. granted you could sell them still, the market will be low until they actually release them.

I have seen the box of goodies, its the 4 ships in their packs. so yes, they will be popped out and played with. Although the one I'm going to is at 10pm at night, if I make it to the final table, I may just flip a coin as it is going to be rather late or early if you want, but regardless...I may just say hey, you want to filp to decide whose first?

After the close of the preliminary rounds, the tournament’s two top players set aside their personal squads and command new squads that they build with the featured Wave IV starfighters!

So the other elimination and (swiss) preliminary rounds will be played as normal? And the 3rd and 4th place players get the unwanted used ships from the final round?

Seems like it would be easier to say the top 4 pick in order and compete with new squads for the final, which is offers some other prize.

They may not even come in packaging. Maybe aTO with the kit can confirm/deny, but the price kit materials are made by FFG in house and are not exactly the same as the production models/cards made in China.

I am NOT the TO, but helped get the Xwing at the store going, saw the Tourney Box, it has the ships, in their packaging. it came with Cards for the players, the 4 ships, and a poster.

From what I have read elsewhere heres how it goes:

at the end of the normal rounds 1st and 2nd play a final. the player who finished 1st after the normal rounds gets to pick either rebel of Imperial.

Each player then has to build a squad that includes both of the ships from their faction in their list to determine the winner.

if you want to make sure you get to use the Phantom/defender then make sure your at the top of the pile after the regular rounds.

no complaining should follow.

Well this step depends on if the TO/FLGS has the packs open and dials assembled etc to save time so the top table doesn't fall to far behind the other tables

Edit: if I'm not on the Top table I want them to fall behind so after my game is over I can watch the "pros" using the new toys
